I am looking for a job in the States after expating to Canada for a year to learn French and for my husband's job. Currently, I am a freelance travel-journalist, regular journalist, and copywriter. I have three questions:
1) I've heard people are making their resumes look amazing these days and I've seen a few - coloured text, social media links, etc. Anyone know of a good template or any tips for this?
2) How do I get my whole situation out of the way? I use my last US address and mention that I live in French Canada and will be returning soon in the last paragraph of the cover letter. Should I keep doing that?
3) I am a freelancer now and have heard the term has negative connotations. I just list the clients I work for and what I do for them in one block. Is there a better term to use/thing to do?
Thank you all! Please send positive job thoughts my way.
Re: Job search help - few questions
1. I would not use colored text. That screams tacky and unprofessional to me. You can google "[field] sample resumes" and see all sorts of examples.
2. If you are relocating to a particular area soon, use that address, not a past one. I'm assuming you're moving back for your husband again? Or am I missing something?
3. Freelance doesn't necessarily have negative connotations. I currently freelance. IMO it's all in how you present it, and how much regular work you do. If the work was spotty and not terribly challenging, I can see it as a negative. If you've been regularly freelancing, especially if you've been doing increasing amounts of work, NBD.
