What do you guys do with old hair dryers, straighteners, etc.?

I just ordered a new hair dryer and straightener. I'm not sure what to do with my old ones.

My hair dryer still WORKS, so I can donate it. I personally wanted something that dried faster and was less damaging and I've had my current one for several years. But nonetheless, it still works, so I will probably just take it to Salvation Army (I wish we had a women's shelter around here!)

But, my straightener really doesn't work any more. Is there anything I can do with it other than just throwing it away?

Any information would be helpful! Thanks!

Re: What do you guys do with old hair dryers, straighteners, etc.?

  • I would freecycle the hairdryer and probably offer up the straightener as well- but our freecycle is rather large w/ plenty of people who are tinkerers/hoarders who will take just about any broken down appliance and attempt to fix it, strip it for parts, wires, etc.

If your freecycle isn't that great, you could probably recycle it at an e-recycling place- I know our best-buy will take old appliances, I would think an old hair straightener would qualify.

    Oh, thanks for the idea!

We just moved to a new state, and our city is very small. I doubt there is a good freecycle program.

Our closest Best Buy is an hour away (!) but I do remember last time we were there seeing the old small appliance recycling thing out front. I will definitely call and see if a straightener counts. I think we might be heading that way this weekend anyway!

I don't know where you live- but don't count it out- the city I live just outside of is under 40k people but the freecycle (which also includes a few surrounding areas/towns) has 4k people on it!
