FIL + attic work = hole in ceiling (long)
DH and FIL were working on a big project in the attic to put down a bunch of plywood to a) create a ton of storage space in our walk-in attic and b) prevent someone from putting a hole in the ceiling - which has happened twice... Err, make that three times now.
So I was getting ready to go out shopping with MIL. I heard banging (DH was hammering something) and then the sound of glass breaking. I immediately thought that the chandelier in the dining room had come crashing down. Not quite...
I ran to the dining room to see a huge hole in the ceiling, insulation everywhere, and one of the globes on the chandelier busted. As it turns out, FIL had put his foot through the ceiling and hit the chandelier, breaking a globe and bending it, but it saved him from falling and injuring himself. He was fine, thank goodness. Our ceiling and brand new chandelier, not so much.
I wish I had taken a pic on Saturday, but I was too pissed. Here's what it looks like now, after our handyman put the pieces back up so at least they wouldn't be hanging down with risk of falling and to see if it could be an easier repair (nope). The seam along the top left and right are where they were hanging.
Hopefully, it'll get fixed this week and a new chandelier is on order. The IL's are paying for it.
Thank goodness nobody was hurt and the cats were already put away safe in the basement and all the insulation and glass was picked up before they were ever released. I'm just taking it really hard because we were almost finished with that room and we have so much other crap we're working on to get done before the holidays, and now this. They are going to try to repair it, but the worst-case scenario involves replacing the entire ceiling in that room/section of the house (open floor plan), which also means having to replace and paint crown molding. We've put so much work into the dining room all summer long and we were so close to being finished. Now I just want to cry.

Oh no Melissa this sucks!! Hopefully they'll be able to repair it for you! My dad made a pretty big hole in their breakfast room ceiling before and they were able to, hopefully you'll be just as lucky!

Meredeth - it is mostly because of the popcorn crap that they may have to do a full replacement. Apparently, getting the popcorn to match is the ***. The contractor also noted a crack that extended from the hole and that the ceiling was sagging, probably because of this major incident, one other major incident, and one smaller incident. All were patched before. You can see one of the patches because the popcorn isn't quite right (DH and a friend did that repair). The area that would be affected is the dining room and the entry way. They share the same ceiling until you hit the living room, where it stops at a wall, and then continues higher up into a vaulted ceiling.
Of course, that is the worst-case scenario. From what I understand, that shouldn't be necessary, but it was talked about.
