Help me decide on a trip...

DH and I have decided to take a long weekend in January.  But I keep going back and forth on what I want to do.

We talked about going to Fredericksburg, leaving C with my mom on the way (easy) and taking a day off of work.  I don't want to use my hotel discount, so we're looking at a B&B.  The benefit is that it is something we've never done before and it will be easy to drop C on the way.

Second option is taking a short 4-day cruise out of Galveston.  It actually comes out to about the same price, once we add in money we'll spend in Fredericksburg, so that's not the issue.  And I've been really wanting to do something beachy recently.  However, it would be a day longer and we'd have to get my mom to come here.  Also, the first January cruise we took had perfect weather the entire time.  The last two we've had friends go on...they said the weather was good in Cancun, but pretty cool the days at sea so I'm not going to bank on being able to lay by the pool for 3 days.

I'm stuck.  Or...any other suggestions?

  • could you just fly to cancun? we only did a 4 day trip and it was (or should have been-the way back had issues but you can fly straight so it shouldnt' be a problem) about half day travel each way, so I felt like we had enough time there.

Yeah, but I think airfare would put it out of what we wanted to pay.  I need to shop that though.

  • the travel agent we used for that destination wedding in jamaica was pretty awesome-- some of those funjet vacation packages are freaking cheap.  it might be worth looking in to...

Oh, and my vote is definitely for a beachy vaca or cruise.

  • I would say Fredericksburg because it would be an easier get-away and because I am not a fan of cruises.

  • Does your mom have a preference, since she'd be watching C?

My thoughts exactly. If I wanted quick and beachy, I would fly somewhere in Mexico or Central America and research like crazy to get a good deal. But cruises are so not my thing.

  • Wow. This is really weird. DH and I are trying to decide the same thing right now. Our wedding anniversary is in Feb so we wanted to do something relaxing and just get away. We were debating going to Wimberley or a cruise out of Galveston. I think we have decided on the cruise. #1 I don't want to have to drive or ride for several hours. #2 We could take a 4-5 day cruise for the same price as the cabin we wanted to rent. #3 I don't have to cook! And I can order room service whenever I want! We have never been on a cruise before so we want to see if we are cruise type people as well.

  • Mexico or Belize.  We got an awesome deal.  We were able to use the minimum FF miles and got an awesome rate on a hotel ($125 a night!!!).  We would have spent more staying in Tx.

There are some nice all inclusive packages to Mexico....

  • i vote for fredricksburg....or the flying to an inexpensive mexico resort others suggested. but i'd probably still lean towards the fredricksburg trip - it's easier logistically and just sounds easier which = more relaxing imo

I agree. I think the simplicity of this plan will help you enjoy yourself more.

definitely this and I loooove the Inn Above Onion Creek

  • I am not a fan of cruises either. And if the weather is cold you have no choises when you are on the boat.

In Fredricksburg we stayed at InnOnThe Creek just after we got engaged. but it was spring 1.5 years ago. We stayed in the cheapest room and it was great. Spacious enough for us. They have an outdoor hot tub and the breakfast is wonderful. It will be cold there but you will not spend a lot of time outdoors. Lots of shops, WWII museum,

If you like the outdoors, Big Bend. Stay in Marathon at The Gage Hotel.

  • wow, that's a hard one. I would go cruise! I rather be in the hill country in the spring time.
