QOTD Tuesday (November! Thanksgiving!)

Now it's time to move on to the next holiday!

What are your plans for Thanksgiving? Traveling, staying local, visiting family, etc.?

Re: QOTD Tuesday (November! Thanksgiving!)

  • staying local & i'm thinking about hosting. i love hosting t-day (usually I cook the turkey, 2 sides & a dessert & have others bring extra sides, desserts, beverages, etc. so it's a huge feast!)
  • My parents travel here and I host dinner for them and my FIL.  I think my BFF is out of town this year (we usually do a joint dinner), so I'll be doing all of the cooking myself.  I'm thinking of downgrading to a roasted chicken (faster/easier) and fewer sides, because I can't justify doing all that work by myself for just five adults and a toddler.

  • Not sure yet actually.  We rotate major holidays each year so this year turkey day is with my family.  We are trying to convince them to come to us, but otherwise we will head there (upstate ny).  We should decide soonish, I hope.

  • we'll be here and I hope to be hosting again - although maybe not the CrazyTown guest list of last year. In fact, I hope to have the basement and first floor painted by then, too -- or else the cabinet can't go back up and the eleventy billlion wine glasses on my dining room table can't be put away and we'll have to go somewhere else for the holiday. My SIL can't cook -- at all -- so if we go there, I will still make the dinner, and we'll cart it to their house. (done that before....my turkey is JUST that good!)

  • Screw T-Giv, I saw a CVS window display for Christmas this morning!  I guess it's time to start annoying colleagues with the Sounds of the Season channel on Pandora!

But for real, I'm entertaining the thought of hosting Thanksgiving this year.  I think it might be time to prove myself to my husband's family.  It will be a challenge, since there are some foodies in the family, but I figure if I tackle the turkey(s), and have everyone else pitch in on sides/desserts, then it will work out.

  • We're doing something different this year. Usually we switch off from having dinner at my dad's (local) and traveling to the ILs in Ohio. This year, my dad is going to Maine for Thanksgiving--we thought about going but it's a lot of travel for basically a one-day holiday.

SO, I made my brother host it Smile It's just going to be me, DH,  DS, my brother, his GF and her parents, and my mom and her BFF. The menu already looks amazing--I can't wait! I love Thanksgiving!

Oh, and then the weekend after actual Thanksgiving, DH and I are hosting Fake Thanksgiving with a bunch of our friends--I think we've been doing that for almost 10 years now and it's almost as good as real Thanksgiving, without the family drama.

  • We go to my MIL's, which is about 10 minutes away. She's not the best cook in the world, so it makes it pretty easy to avoid overindulging. I usually bring a dessert or two. It usually us, MIL, her partner, her partner's daughter and her family.
  • We're spending it with the ILs.  I'm hoping we're going to go to BIL's house (only 5 hours away with space for everyone) rather than F/MIL's (8 hours away and too small), but DH's family takes FOREVER to make any kind of decision, so we probably won't know until the week before.  Drives me crazy.

  • I always host the "political refugees" (those in politics whose jobs require them to stay in the city and never see their families) who my H used to work with.  I roast a large turkey breast, make all of the sides, desserts, etc. and they all bring wine.  Wink

  • We are going to my parents who live in the area. We have hosted T-giving for the past couple of years since we moved to our house, but this year we'd rather host Christmas because of LO.

Thanksgiving dinner is my mom's best cooking, so I am looking forward to it! AND this year I don't have gestational diabetes! And I'm back on dairy! I will FEAST!

  • We're hosting! But it's always just 6 people total. T-giving is my favorite holiday!
  • we'll be in barcelona! jamon instead of turkey :)

  • Hopefully nothing.  We travelled for Thanksgiving and Christmas last year and realized we much prefer to be by ourselves.

DH has to work, so if anything I might go to a friends house.

  • We normally travel to DH's family up in NYC for Thanksgiving.  But, with DD's first birthday not too far after Thanksgiving ILs are driving down here for her party.  We'll just have Thanksgiving with at my parents' house (local).

  • DH is off, which is awesome. His co-worker would rather be off for Christmas, but since Christmas is a Sunday, I think he got the good end of the deal. (She'll be off on the Monday, I guess).

Anyway, we are having over another couple we met who are also not from the area so don't have any family nearby. He's a vegan, so they are bringing some sides and desserts and I will make a stuffed turkey breast and probably non-vegan mashed potatoes and green bean casserole because those are the things we can't live without. Another friend and her kids may come by as well, they've been invited a couple of places, so she's just going to hop around.

    I'm excited, I love Thanksgiving.

I'll be stalking Craigslist for the next couple of weeks looking for a new dining table! We just have a pub table that seats 4, and we've been meaning to replace it since we moved, but haven't gotten around to it. Now we're down to the wire! I don't want to spend a lot, though, since this is a rental and the size & color of table I ultimately want won't go.

  • We'll be celebrating an early Thanksgiving with my family over Veteran's Day weekend, since I will be out of town with DH's family and my cousin will be in town for her HS reunion.  As for DH's family, his parents are taking all 13 of us (kids, spouses, and grandkids) to Turks & Caicos with the money they got from selling DH's grandmother's Manhattan condo.  So we get the best of both worlds - Thanksgiving dinner at my grandmother's and a Caribbean vacation!

  • We're trying to convenience my father in law to come out here for the holiday.  My mother in law recently passed away (October) and we don't want him sitting home alone (they're in Wisconsin).
  • We're staying local and going to my aunt and uncle's house. They're excellent cooks, so dinner is always yummy when they host. I will probably offer to bring a side and dessert.

  • Staying local.  I am actually not looking forward to this thanksgiving.  It will be just DH and I.  We originally planned not to travel for thanksgiving since we have a wedding the weekend before, but now I am regretting it.
  • We're hosting - for the first time ever! I'm so excited to use my china and cook a (hopefully) delicious meal. Yay!

Then we're heading to see DH's family for the rest of the weekend.

  • I have a high risk pregnancy so we're not travelling.  My family is getting together at Christmas.  My in-laws are dysfunctional to put it mildly.  We opted to skip Thanksgiving at my SIL's house.  We're having a friend whose husband is in Afghanistan over.  I wanted a low key holiday.  I don't know that I'm up for cooking a whole spread.

    i know wegman's does catering

for christmas 2009 we had all but a few things from stew leonard's (in NY & CT only, unfortunately) and it made for the most relaxed, merriest christmas we'd had to that point. i highly recommend this route for keeping life easy and still having a great meal.

  • We're staying local, and I'll be cooking for 10-15 adults, plus a few little kiddies.

My goal this year?  To use less than 2 lbs of butter in creating the meal.  LOL.

  • We'll be hosting for the third year. Our foodie neighbor offers to brine and deep fry our turkey and I make the sides and Whole Foods pitches in a little, too. I wish more of our family was able to come but we do our big traveling at once over Christmas.

  • My sister and I are hotsting the six of us at my parents house (my mom just had knee replacement surgery, otherwise she would be hosting) on Thursday, then on Friday we go to my in-laws house. Which new plan...bring wine as a "gift" so we don't have do their dry, vegetarian meal.  (Background, my aunt in law doesn't drink (though she encourages everyone around her to drink), so therefore doesn't buy alcohol, so there is none in the house because my uncle in law is an agrophobe...) It's an insanely odd situation.

But the short answer is, staying localish--> Warrenton, VA and Columbia, MD.

  • staying local and hosting. I love when everyone comes to us!

  • We're having dinner at my parents with all of my brothers and their families.  I'm in charge of coordinating the meal and will make the turkey, stuffing and gravy, my brothers are doing the sides and my mom the desserts and cranberry sauce. We'll have house guests here in town though (family of friends who don't have space to host them) so I still need to clean and get my house ready for guests.
  • My parents and in-laws are coming. It'll be the first time that there will be 6 of us in our 2 br 1 bath condo, but it's only for a few days. I'm really looking forward to having everyone together since it hasn't happened since our wedding nearly 2 1/2 years ago. My mom and I will be cooking, and maybe my MIL too, we'll see. I know she looks at coming to visit us as an escape (they live on a farm), so I want her to be able to relax.

  • Staying home for Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. I have to say I'm thrilled about it!

We are hosting Thanksgiving at our place. So far we have 4 out of the 6 people invited coming over. We'll see if the other two decide to come.

I'm excited that Jeremy will actually try get to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner this year.
