A cautious hello

DH has been interviewing with a large company and after three interviews, they are talking like he has the job. He got a call today that they are flying him to Dallas tomorrow night or Thursday morning to meet the team and do an event with them

We will be living in the area, moving from a tiny village in Michigan. I know nothing about the area, so tips on where to live as far as good neighborhoods and whatnot are greatly appreciated.

Let's hope I'll be there in Cali soon before the snow comes here!

DH's office would be in Sunnyvale, but I'm looking at living in the San Jose area....I think that's only a 20 minute commute. 

Whereabouts in MI did your grandma live?

Ah, we used to live in SJ. You might be able to use CalTrain, too. I took it from SJ to Palo Alto. My grandma lived in Grand Rapids.

Did you like SJ? Also, GR is an hour south of me

We did like SJ. There are quite a few women here who live in the South Bay, too. Yeah, I have yet to meet anyone else who lives(ed) near GR besides my grandma and aunt.

Beware, traffic can add greatly to that commute. It's 20 min for me to get to S'vale on a Saturday, but 45-50 min during AM rush hour.

DH says 30 if you don't get the right bullet.  From our house, it would be about an hour between light rail and caltrain

Keep in mind, San Jose is very large and spread out.

This is all great information! What other areas besides SJ would you recommend that isn't far from Sunnyvale?

From the downtown SJ station. So that's why I said if you were close to the station in SJ to commute it would be that long. It would be the bullets in the morning. That's what I always took to Palo Alto and it took 20 mins to get there, which is a lot further. It would all depend on where in SJ you lived.

We live in Santa Clara and really like it (we are near Santa Clara university).  Santa Clara is the next town south from Sunnyvale.  I commute from SC to Palo Alto and never get on the freeway (I take central expressway) and it takes me 30 mins.

Santa Clara is a good suggestion. I also like Mountain View. DH and I have lived in both and I slightly prefer Mtn. View but I also prefer not to be so far south as SJ.

Welcome. Another vote for Mountain View! It's right next door to Sunnyvale (north) and has light rail and caltrain. Our downtown area is fab!

I'd put in a vote for Sunnyvale itself.  I really liked living there.  Nice downtown.  Easy access.  We found it cheaper than Mtn View

Welcome! I used to live in San Jose, but moved to the East Bay Area a few years back. I agree with BoomBoom about the commute since I used to live in SJ/work in Sunnyvale. I would recommend looking in Mountain View and Santa Clara for closer commutes, but SJ is a great place to live as well.

This. I am from Santa Clara originally and I love it!. That's your best bet for commuting. I work in SJ and its nice too but its biiiigggg It can take you 20 mins just to get across town
