When to call/What to say

Two days ago I was on a stores website who was looking to fill a full-time retail/sales position. They had a form to fill out to send them your name, number, and email address (nothing else - no education/work experience, availability, etc.). I have yet to receive a phone call or email from anyone at the store. I planned on calling today to follow up and let them know I am interested in the position. Is 2 days long enough to wait to call? And what would you say when you get ahold of someone? Sorry if I sound like a total dummy - I have been a SAHM for almost a year and I feel like a newb getting back into the workforce.

Re: When to call/What to say

  • A lot of retail stores constantly accept applications even if there isn't a position available. The online form you mentioned sounds like their way of having back-up names in case people quit. I recommend calling, or going in person to the store and asking if the position is actually open right now. Most stores have an application in the store for you to fill out.
  • I'd wait a week. They may get a lot of interest and are going through initial apps. After a week I'd call to confirm they received your info, that you're very interested in the job, and when they expect to make a decision on next steps.

  • I agree to waiting a week.  I recently started a position in retail for the season.  I applied online and didn't hear back for close to a week.

If you don't hear back I'd go in and ask for a paper application OR fill out the application on a computer in the store.  The HR will definately see that copy.  Right now all the stores are loading up on people who want retail associate or team member position.  A lot of stores are opening earlier this year for Black Friday.  If you don't hear back by next Wed I'd go in and talk to them.  It's already starting to get busy at our store for Christmas.
