Someone in my office smells very badly (b.o., crap, smoke, and other scents). She's an assistant director and one of the people I report to. Normally, this is an issue I ignore, but everyday this week, her smell has been so bad that: 1) it lingers throughout the office and 2) is making me sick.
My office is so small (5 regular employees plus 3 student workers) that the dynamic has been created that if you have an issue you discuss it directly with the person you have issue with. This is such a sensitive subject, though, and I feel it would be inappropriate to approach her directly.
With that being said, if you were a director (the other person I report to), would you be annoyed if someone came to you complaining about another employee's hygiene?
Re: Help with hygiene issue
I've read other articles about this issue and I think your best bet would be to confront the director. They should be able to handle the situation by speaking to the individual in private about their body odor. I wouldn't be annoyed about it. It's just one more facet with dealing with people. I also think it's unwise to try some of the passive aggressive methods of dealing with this sort of thing (i.e., sending anonymous emails, leaving deodorant on the desk, etc.). Not that you would do that, but it seems like a lot of people would rather deal with it that way.
Here's an article about it:
