XP - Paint help

Okay, so I am avoiding working too hard today, and the D&R board is very slow, so I need a little help with my house.

I have a small wet bar, about 6x8 or so.

It has builtin lower cabinets, and then we're going to add shelving above for glassware & liquor bottles (in pretty bottles, not whatever it comes in).  We're also going to add a narrower shelf that circles the top of the room for pretty stuff.  That's all going to be painted SW Hazel, which is a very light blue-green color.  I have lots of teal in my house, so it'll tie in with the two rooms that the bar opens to, the living and dining rooms.

On the wall behind the shelving, I'm going to do a penny wall, with a charcoal background.  (Google penny floor for an idea of what it'll look like.)  This color will not show through very much - there will only be a small gap between pennies, so think of it more as a grout color than a wall color.

The trim in the room (baseboards, crown, and bar-window facing) will be antique white to match the rest of the house trim.

I'm pretty set on those colors, but am having a hard time with the rest of the walls and ceiling.  I'm thinking of doing SW Amazing Gray on the walls, to tie in the charcoal behind the pennies, but I have no idea about the ceiling (it's currently cream, so that won't really go).

So, two questions... 1, Any suggestions on ceiling color?  None of my other ceilings are bright white, they're all cream, so actual white makes me nervous.  2, Is this too many different colors in such a small room?  I realize I could eliminate a color and do the cabinets the same as the trim color (antique white) but I'm not crazy about white cabinets, and then it'd look just like my bathrooms, which have the same cabinets painted white... and I also like the idea of the teal tying in with the rest of the house.  Please tell me if I'm crazy or not.

Re: XP - Paint help

  • I think your colors go well together, and I love the penny wall idea.

I'm trying to visualize this wet bar.   Is it it's own space, like a recessed area or small room?   If so, would putting amazing gray on the ceiling be awful?  My first instinct was to say white, but I see your point about the cream.

It's hard to say without pictures. :)

  • It is its own space - has a doorway from a teensy hallway that goes to the kitchen, and then bar "windows" that open to the living room and dining room.  Here's a picture from before we gutted it.   This window looks into the dining, and the wall opposite the shelving looks into the living room.  The lower cabinet and countertops are still there - the shelves, wineracks, and paneling are all gone and it's just textured sheetrock now. The counters will be replaced eventually... but for now, they're staying.  They have flecks of browns, grays, and a teensy bit of green (like oxidized copper).  We're going to replace the cabinet door handles, but the sink will probably stay.

  • I've been sitting here for a few minutes trying to picture this.   I think your colors coordinate well, but I'm having trouble picturing light blue cabinets, light counter tops, light gray walls, and BOOM dark copper and charcoal wall.   It seems like a very bold transition.

So what if you continued the charcoal color to the walls, since it isn't a vast area?  Would that make it too dark?

Feel free to tell me I'm crazy.   We may have to have book club at your house to make such important decisions. :)

  • I was afraid of using the charcoal all around and making it too dark.  It's in the center of the house, so there isn't a lot of natural light - just a small fixture (currently just a plain bulb hanging halfway out of the ceiling.  Don't judge.)  The gray I was considering for the walls is a lighter version on the same color card...  But, I guess I can always throw some charcoal paint on other walls and see what happens!

I was hoping to buy paint this weekend, even though I'm not ready to paint just yet... I'll host book club after it's done, when my house isn't a work zone anymore!

PS - I like your BOOM description... it's either going to be BOOM that's really awesome, or BOOM wth was she thinking.  That's why I'm having such a dilemma!

  • Haha, I was just sitting here thinking..  Dang, did I really just tell her to paint her walls black?

What type/color flooring is in there?

  • I think they light gray would be nice for the walls and ceiling. I don't think the charcoal will be too dramatic since it will be behind the pennies (which I totally love, BTW). In fact, I think the penny wall will have a similar effect as the mirror. Just my two cents (get it? two cents? tee hee).
  • Hahaha, Anna, well played.

The flooring in the room is large, light tan/cream-colored tile - the same that we did a few months ago (pics on FB, if you're curious).  Not ideal for a gray color scheme, but ties in well with the counters, and goes with the rest of the house, so it's here to stay.

  • Random, but would painting the cabinets the charcoal color be bad?

I see light floor, dark cabinet, light coutertop, dark penny wall, and then the lighter grey walls/ceiling.

I'm sure that whatever you decide to go with will look fantastic!

  • I like it! :)

we had a penny wall in our garage at my parents house. It was pretty awesome. It sparked some odd projects off of it. Like a beer bottle cap bar table, and a wine cork wall.
