so upset with myself

Since relocating to a new region, I've been aggressively applying for jobs.  About an hour ago, I noticed something terrible.  Every single cover letter I sent out in the last month has had a typo in the signature.

My signature is my name, with some contact information underneath.  The ".com" from my email address somehow ended up right after my name.  So I'd been signing my cover letters with the name "edith hamilton.com", and my email address "edithhamiltin@gmail" underneath.

I have triple checked the content of each cover letter, to make sure everything was perfect.  But somehow, this signature error escaped me.  I am so embarrassed right now.  There were so many jobs for which I should've been a shoe-in, that never got back to me.  Now I'm wondering if it was because of this?

What would you guys do at this point?  I'm probably not going to do anything...  Do HR people even read cover letters?  Do they pay attention to the sig?

Re: so upset with myself

  • Some people do, some don't. I got a job at a company where I spelled April "Aptil" in my job experience.

I'd let it go, make this a lesson learned, and keep applying.

  • There's nothing you can do about it now, so chalk it up to a learning experience and try to mentally move past it.  I know it's tough but it's likely the sheer volume of competition that's been hurting you rather than a couple characters of text at the end of your cover letter.

  • I was sending out a resume with "attributers" instead of "attributes" for the first 3 months of my search. I was sitting at a lobby of a company waiting for my interview when I noticed that mistake for the first time and I remember I was very upset but I had to not think about it for the sake of the interview. I remember during the interview, each person had a copy of my resume and I couldn't help but think "did they notice the attributers?"

When I got home from that interview, I went through every single line of my resume to make sure nothing else was misspelled (at least 4 people had looked over my resume but no one had caught these). Guess what? there was another major word misspelled and not caught by either Word or people. Distinctations for distinctions.

It happens, don't beat yourself over it because you can't do much about the past, just go over it thoroughly and make sure everything is looking the way you want it.

  • Thanks- I guess this is just motivation to apply harder now.  I hate to think that a formatting error will make a big difference in where I'm going to work.  Excuse me now while I drown my sorrows in a can of diet soda.  :)
  • Honestly, you are HUMAN! Humans make mistakes.

I really don't think that because your signature wasn't perfect they'd overlook you. They have your phone number, right? Most people would call you for an interview.

Maybe you could just put your computer away for the night and take a hot bath. Reapply tomorrow morning.

  • I had a major typo in my cover letter, of maybe it was my TY letter, for my current job.  Nothing you can do at this point so just let it go and don't stress.
