WWIND? Flying and FF miles.

I'm in a bit of a tiff with my rewards program. Basically they're saying I have to use my 328,631 miles before January 31 with only one phone call to the service center.

My take is that they believe normal people couldn't do this so they'll still get out of it without having to honor most of my miles. Little do they know the neeps household is last minute planners and Christmas is our big trip each year.

Now for the options:

Would you go to a bucket list destination - even if you hadn't been planning to and might feel rushed to do it in 2 months - and leave 89,000 miles behind? Assume this is not your only chance at the bucket list destination.

OR

Would you go somewhere you know you would like and enjoy - but would just be icing on your travel cake - and use up all but 8,000 of the miles? Assume you may not go to this destination otherwise in the future.

Re: WWIND? Flying and FF miles.

  • Can you use the remaining 89,000 miles to book some hotel nights at your bucket list destination? Can you get any upgrades with the miles? Like extra leg room or anything?

I want to know what the destinations are! I would want to go with the bucket list one, but it would make me angry to leave behind 89,000 miles.

I'll just post for no reason and not offer an opinion at all. Confused

  • Bucket list would most likely be India and Sri Lanka. If I could get over my planning hurdle it could be South Africa.

Other destinations are Malaysia or Vietnam.

  • What awesome trips! I loved Vietnam. One of my favorite places that I have visited - ever. Good luck with a tough decision!

  • Which airline? I know that all the programs I'm part of demand I have some sort of activity in my account or they expire. I recently only used half, just before they expired, and the rest suddenly stayed active for another year and a half. If that's the case it really doesn't matter what you choose. Otherwise I'd go for the option that uses the most miles - make them pay up!

  • South Africa is amazing!

I'm with Brit.  I couldn't decide.  I'd do option two because option one seems like you wouldn't enjoy it properly AND leave behind 89,000.

However, if you never plan that will always be the case (with the being stressed at last minute planing).  If you always get these types of miles, then why rush the bucket list?  Eh, I'm leaning towards option 2.

  • Do the bucket list and try to use the miles with a hotel or something

  • Update:

We decided to go to Vietnam. We love Vietnam - this will be our 3rd time there. We've never done the south so we're flying into Ho Chi Min and have two weeks to kick around the south and up the middle coast.

The tipping point was that we could fly non-stop in business for 500 euros cheaper than going to India. Go figure. The bonus is that it used up 320,000 miles so there's only 8,000 left.

As DH said, "How long do you plan to live? Plenty of time to go to India and SA on our own terms."
