Turkey Questions

We're hosting "Friendsgiving" this year and we need a turkey.  In years past we had dinner with the IL's and MIL supplied the turkey she got from work, but this year because we're not having them for dinner, I'll need to get my own turkey.  I'm trying to decide if we want to do fresh turkey or frozen.  How much would an average frozen turkey cost at Meijer (or wherever)?  Byron Center meats has fresh local turkey $2.29lb.  We'll only need turkey for 5 people, so we don't need anything huge.  I've never had fresh turkey before.  Is it better than frozen?  School me.

Re: Turkey Questions

  • I've never purchased a turkey, so I really can't help you very much.  I think the Byron Center Meats price sounds really good though.  If you want to compare prices, WendyGR did a blog post about local turkey sources today.

With a small group like yours you may want to consider get just a turkey breast instead of a whole bird. Last year I made a turkey breast in the crock pot for my family of 3 + my parents and it was plenty. Maybe if you have a couple bigger eaters add a couple turkey legs as well.

    Thanks for the shout out!

I agree with the suggestion that a breast might be enough, although if you like leftovers you'd want to take that into consideration. I have never had fresh but I think it would be easier than wondering if it's thawed all the way. DH cooks the meat in our house so I wouldn't even know where to start - I'd be paranoid that it wouldn't get thawed in time.
