Storing Important Doc & Holiday Cards

Hey Everyone!

#1... How do you store important documents? ie H's orders, POAs, Will, SSN, Passports, Vehicle Title etc. My Mom always stored our Passports, Birth Cert and SSN in a filing cabinet.. but put other important documents in a water/fire proof safe. We don't have a filing cabinet nor do we have room for one, currently I file most things in an accordion folder.

I would love to find a safe but could use some help starting my search. I have a gun safe but that seemed easier to find one I liked and fit my needs.

#2.....   I'm in the process of picking our Holiday Cards. We already have pictures and I have a groupon. I plan to send them out around Thanksgiving, so I'm looking for more generic season greetings to cover both holidays. I found one that says "Peace on Earth" with spots for our pictures, but I'm wondering if that is going to sound corny coming from a Military couple/family?? (None of our pictures include H in uniform)

Re: Storing Important Doc & Holiday Cards

  • I just picked up a fireproof safe at target.  No research.  My only complaint is that it's slightly too small for our marriage certificate, so that got a little rolled at the end.

I think you could get away with peace, but I admit it might seem a bit... off.  But I doubt anyone would think of it that hard.

    What about just seasons greetings?

  • 1. We have a safe. H found it at Home Depot. It's huge and much more than we need for our purposes, but eh. It has an attachment at the top for hanging file folders, so I made one for each category (birth certificates, passports, orders, bank accounts, insurance, etc) and put like documents in manila folders in the hanging folders.

ETA: Underneath the folders there's about 4 more inches of space, so I put our checkbooks and such there.

    2. I don't think "Peace on Earth" sounds silly coming from a military family. After all, I think that is the goal of the military in the long run.

  • I was just recommended a great looking site.  minted.com  They have a lot of good cards that aren't just xmas and aren't just a generic happy holidays.

    What about something like this?

  • I keep most of our papers in a locked filing cabinet. The really important things are in a waterproof/fire proof safe. We also don't have a lot of room so we couldn't get a big all in one safe.

  • We have a small fire/water safe box that we just keep on the floor in the closet with our birth certificates, marriage license, soc sec cards, etc.

As for the cards I think you would be fine with the peace on earth.  Or is there something like "tis the season" or even just happy holidays?

  • As for the cards, I purchased a livingsocial deal for Simply To Impress

So those are the ones I am picking from. I am still considering purchasing a groupon for Picaboo though.

  • I know from experience, fireproof safes aren't as fireproof as you'd like them to be, so I store important stuff off site and keep copies in case both locations have a fire issue. My mom, on the other hand, keeps the originals and has them in her "this isht is coming with me when I evacuate again" area and stores copies at an offsite location just in case.

  • Another way they said at training I did here was to scan copies of important documents and keep them on a password protected jump drive that you keep with you, like on a keychain or something.

  • I have a file box that has all of our bank info, statements, Tricare stuff, auto repair info, USAA stuff, etc... and right now, I am in the middle of moving overseas, so I have these folders that are divided into sections. One folder has all my relocation docs. I like the fact it has dividers in the folders so I can make easy sections and all my info is at hand. And the 2nd folder has my POA, DH's orders, marriage license, etc...
