Getting pet smells out of carpet

So my dog has had a few accidents in one area in the living room, the turn of the stairs, and at the top of the stairs. I used the pet carpet cleaner whenever I saw that she had gone and there have never been any pee spots or odors. I have also shampooed the carpet at least once or twice a month since moving into the house in May. We're getting ready to rent our house out and the past two times I have shampooed the carpet, an awful pee smell has come up a few days after shampooing. This has never happened and she hasn't even been at our house for the past two months. Does anybody know of any way to get rid of the smell? Will having the carpets professionally shampooed rid these area of the smell?

Re: Getting pet smells out of carpet

  • The method I suggest is long, but very thorough.

After cleaning the carpet as usual (I use a home steam cleaner), allow the carpet to dry. Then, mix a solution of 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water. Smelly, yes, but effective. After you run that over the carpet, clean with just plain water. Let it dry and the smell should be gone for good.

I know, this requires cleaning the carpet 3 (!!!!!) times, but it works. My dad's ex wife had 2 dogs, and when she finally moved out there were ten years worth of smells left behind. This is what we did to clean up, though, and it worked! Leaves the carpet looking good, too.

As for having them professionally done, I can't really say if it would help. I live in an apartment complex and the landlord pays to have the carpets professionally cleaned every time a tenant moves out and then again when he rents the units out. But it seems like there is still a musty, kind of pet-like odor... Maybe it's due to lack of care by the cleaners. Maybe another poster will be able to help you out with that aspect of your question.

    HTH!

  • Try Nature's Miracle. It's enzymatic and works really well.
  • What has worked best for me is a product called "ForceOut".  At our old house, one of our cats got trapped in the attic and had an accident on the floor (carpet).  I used Nature's Miracle and it seemed pretty good, but I felt the smell would come back (esp in humid weather).

DH bought some "ForceOut" (unfortunately, only available online) and it is AWESOME.  I'll never use anything else.

  • Get some Nature's Miracle and follow the directions on the bottle. It's available at pet stores. They have an odor reducer now also but DO NOT get that one. Get the original stuff in the huge white jug with the red lettering.

This. The enzymes break down the scent - so much that even your dog won't be able to smell it after you're done, which means he won't go back to the same spots and pee again.
