Thank you notes

I interviewed with five different people at a company, all in different departments. Only 2 out of the 5 have decision-making abilities with regard to hiring someone for this position.

Would you send a thank you note to all 5 people, or only to the 2 hiring managers? If you'd send a note to all 5 people, would you send everyone the same note? I could try to tailor it slightly to each person, but it would still be pretty similar. I'm always fearful of people comparing notes and figuring out that they all got the same thank you letter!

What do you think?

Re: Thank you notes

  • You don't "stiff" 3 people just because they don't have the decision-making power. They may still have quite a bit of influence. Send all 5.

I would send slightly different notes to each. Surely you discussed something specific with each of them that you can mention in each different note.

Trust me, I have never heard of anyone even mentioning they got a TY note, much less wanting to compare them with me.

Now, go write those notes :)

  • What Dr. L said.

I think there is a reason those 3 people were in the interview, so even though you think they don't have hiring decision power, their impression of you counts.

  • Thank you both. What you said makes complete sense. I sent all five. :)
