XP: Moving to North Plainfield or Orland Park...

We are looking to move to either north Plainfield or to Orland Park.  Can anyone recommend what schools I should be looking out for or what subdivision they would recommend? I really want to be closer to civilization since I am 45 minutes to get to anything right now and we would like a bigger home.

I am originally from the Palos area but my husband works in Naperville.  We are looking for a 4 bedroom home and since everything is so low now we might buy.  I really only know that district 230 is good for hs in Orland, but I'm not sure about Plainfield at all.

If there is a really great grade school/Jr High/HS distict I should pick that is a HUGE factor for me.  I really want good schools.  I have heard to stay away from Oswego hs?  I feel like I really don't have anyone in either of these locations to guide me, so any guidance would help.  I've tried looking on a few sites that grade the schools but the info seems so arbitrary that I thought real people might have a better outlook.

Thanks again!

  • I see your child is only 2 so realistically your school district could change A LOT before she gets to high school.  I grew up in the Hinsdale South HS district, which was a great school when I went there and for the previous 20 years for that matter.  However, now its a terrible school and I would never send my own kids (if I had them) there.

FWIW, I would personally live in Orland over Plainfield.  I frickin hate Plainfield.  Its a bunch of crappy built homes, placed way too close together.  I think Orland is an excellent area with older, well built homes and much nicer areas as far as neighborhoods/neigbors go.  If you stay on the west side of Orland, you can be pretty close to 355 which is so convenient.  I also (personally) think Orland is more upper middle class, where as Plainfield is gonna be more lower middle class if that matters.

I also like Lemont a lot.  If I could afford to move, that is likely where I would go.  I have cousins that live there and are very pleased with the school district.  Its a much smaller district than both Orland/Plainfield.

Good Luck!  I hope you find the right fit for your family :)

  • Thanks so much for the feeback. :)  I know that the schools can change quite a bit in the next 12 years.  It's just the fact that I would like to pick a neighborhood that is "on it's way up" if that makes since.  I really like the feedback you gave about Plainfield vs Orland.  I guess since you are the second person that has recommended Lemont I will check them out too. Thanks :)

  • I grew up in Palos too, and now live in Plainfield.  I also teach in Plainfield (as a sub for now).  If you were to look in Plainfield, you want to look in neighborhoods that go to Walker's Grove, Lincoln, or Freedom elementary schools.

Where in Palos did you live?  I was right near the hospital, went to Palos east and south.
