I saw your post on the travel board about Zanzibar. I absolutely loved it and I'd definitely have that over the Maldives any day. There's more to do and it's got a much more interesting history and culture (IMO). I've never been to the Maldives, but from what I've heard it's really all about the beach and nice bungalow/resort. I think they are two different trips, but for my style of travel, I'd pick Zanzibar every time.
Especially if you combine it with a trip to the Serengeti and/or Kilimanjaro.
