Any tips for Budapest/Bratislava/Vienna?

Hi all,

We always like to have a trip booked before going on holiday :-) We have a couple weeks before our trip to Brussels so we're looking at a trip for Feb/March next year. Probably March given where we're going but we haven't booked flights yet.

We were planning on going for a week and budget is always a consideration!

Any thoughts on how many days we'd need for each city? Our plan originally was to stay in Budapest for 5 nights and Bratislava for 2 nights... but then we got distracted by how close Vienna is to Bratislava. I've been to Austria but just for skiing although DH went to Vienna with his family years ago.

What do y'all think? Any tips for any of these places?

  • I went to Vienna in Feb. several years ago with my mom. We had a good time, but it was really very cold and not quite as much fun for sight-seeing. We spent a lot of time hanging out in museums/palaces and at Demel?s having Sachertorte...yum! The cafe?s are amazing though, so you could warm up over a nice coffee between sights.

Budapest is really cool, but I went in the summer, so no idea how it is in Feb./March. I enjoyed the castle and just walking around. The food was awesome and not too expensive. I really wish that I could have gone to one of the thermal baths, but we didn?t have enough time. I?ve heard that the baths are loads of fun, so maybe a trip to one of them.

  • Bratislava can be done as a day trip or an overnight trip from Vienna. We enjoyed going around the castle. But check the hours because it may be closed due to snow.

We like Vienna. Would recommend getting your palace tickets online in advance, though. That place gets busy.

  • We went to Budapest in May with a not-quite two year old. We were initially there for 5 days (plenty, with W in tow), but ended up there for 7+ with the volanic ash cloud.

If you want to take a trip out of the city, 5 is a good amount, IMO - but no more. You coudl do less, but I'd say a minimum of 3.

You've got the Castle distric, the baths, walking aroudn the river, a trip or two out. (Apparently it's really easy to do if you dont' have  a 22 month old's attention span  - or lack there of - for train travel. I really regret not seeing more of Hungary while we were there.)

  • I'm enjoying reading all of these tips. I'll be in Vienna in January for work, and a friend and I are hoping to do Budapest and perhaps Bratislava as well afterward. Pitt, I can let you know if I find anything fab whilst there (assuming my fingers don't freeze off from the cold!).
  • I haven't been to Bratislava but loved both Budapest and Vienna. I have been to Vienna a couple of times but only short trips and didn't get to see that much but I just loved the city vibe. I went to Budapest years ago and other than the usual stuff (visiting the Parliament was quite interesting) I remember taking a side trip to a cute little village where they make marzipan, other than getting sick on the sweets it was really nice.

I am sure it will be a great trip, I am jelaous!
