Re: AW/FFFC
FFFC: A while back we had a discussion here about the "In Memory Of" stickers on cars. I was totally against it and just didn't get it. This summer my cousins was tragically killed and after her service when all of the family and some close friends met up for lunch her family was handing out "In Memory of" stickers. I took like 5 of them and yes on of them is on my current vehicle and I have the extras for when I get aniother vehicle. I know this sounds crazy but I feel like she is with me all the time when I am driving. I also where a bracelet with her name on that her family had made. I have only not worn it 1 day since it got it and I just felt off all day. It amazes me how my opinion changed about "In Memory Of" stickers and other things.
AW: I am 4 days away from seeing Buddy Valstro (aka: Cake Boss) live the Tulsa PAC. I am so excited!
AW: I'm doing this first since the good news is actually far more important. We were finally able to book venues for our wedding (and confirm with the photographer that the new date is ok). I'm so glad to have that resolved and my only complaint is that I wish that date were here already.
FFFC: A while back a diamond fell out of my ring. I took it in to be fixed and when they returned it, there was discoloration of two other diamonds. The jeweler was unable to clean it and they advised me it was better to just custom order a new one since they'd realized that particular ring was susceptible to losing diamonds if t had been sized down. So we place an order and the wait time is approximately 3 months. In the meantime, i keep the original, slightly damaged ring. Well it's been about 3 months and yesterday another diamond fell out. I called to see what I needed to do about that and the estimated delivery date of my new one and they said they have no record of my special order. So now I don't know what to do with this. What if I order another and then the last one comes in? I even called their other 2 locations in case I mis-remembered and did the order at a different location (why they can't just cooperate I don't understand). Anyhow, I'm irrationally upset about this whole deal and I may have taken it out on Kevin last night. I owe him an apology for being snippy.
I bribed B to sleep in his own bed by telling him that we would go to his favorite place this morning if he slept. He cried and cried and cried and cried...poor kid, he's slept with me or H for the past two years. He's started sleeping like sh!t and it's time for him to sleep in his own bed if we're going to have another kid any time soon. He got up and down until about 10pm and then woke up at 2am...I got in bed with him at 2 because I couldn't deal with him being upset anymore. This is going to suck. And I'm going to run out of things to bribe him with.
YAY! And I saw you in those pants and you looked great.
FFFC: Mom and Dad are visiting today. SO excited about that, but not excited that they're dropping by my office to see where I work and meet my co-workers. I feel like a 3yo and they're visiting daycare or something. I know I should be glad they care, but... yeah.
AW: A pair of boots I've been dying to get are arriving at my house today. I can't wait!
my bookshelf!
Bloggy
It's been a sh!tty week. I finally had a mental breakdown last night over everything that's been going on...this is the first time in quite awhile that I've felt like I don't have it all together in my life. I can't wait until Thanksgiving, when I'll have a few days to regroup.
No real AW here. I will say that I am loving this weather though. Loving it.
Sorry you're having a rough time, E.
I have another whine while I'm at it. My teeth effing hurt. A lot. I was supposed to get the bottom braces off yesterday, and I'm not entirely sure why that was postponed a few more weeks, but if they were even that close to being ready to remove then re-banding them yesterday should just be more stabilization and shouldn't be moving/hurting right?
My car is in the shop because it is uncooperative in cold weather. I'm all pissy that the money I was going to spend at H&M in Dallas this weekend is now going to my shiitty car.
I look way better now as an almost-30 professional than I did while I was in college. I will proudly rock a slutty Halloween custome. I do know to keep those pics off FB, though.
And THAT is the difference!!!
FFFC-My sister is starting a business and she wants me to help her with it. I told her that I didn't have the time and she decided that she could work around my schedule. Well I start a new class on Wednesday and next Saturday I am having a trunk party, (this is the first time we invited people to our house since we moved in, 1 year ago) and I am pissed because I have to spend the day with my sister tomorrow at a show for her business and I still have school work to finish before Wednesday and house work to do before next Saturday, and I feel she is intruding, but I promised her I would go with her tomorrow.
AW-Daylight Savings ends tomorrow.
I don't think this would be considered an AW, but I really wanted to share it because it was awesome.
The other day at work I was super, duper stressed. I was trying to figure out my spring school schedule. There are three classes I MUST take next semester if I want to graduate on time. But they were not working out with my work schedule (I have to work a certain number of hours a week to keep my insurance and benefits.) I was also nervous and stressed about the tutoring hotline job I started this week. And I had a big test the next day that I was trying to study for while I wasn't busy at work. I was a mess from all that stress. I got into my car after work and Air1 was on (a christian radio station.) The DJ started talking about stress and he read Matthew 6:25-34 which is a passage about having faith in God, not worrying, and trusting that God is in control. It was so, so, so comforting and the timing couldn't have been more perfect.
FFFC: I had ice cream for dinner last night

It was elitist, but not surprising. (that what you were looking for?) I don't have a ton of patience for anyone who wants to play martyr though, so the $1.50/hr bit got a hefty eyeroll from me too.
Honestly, I most definitely considered earning potential when I chose my career and I think most everyone does. If that parameter doesn't weigh heavily enough for you to let earnig potential influence your career choices, then good luck with all that. I'll assume you're getting some super awesome satisfaction and happiness out of it that I don't see and neither one of us will lament how wronged we are for it, mmkay?
Ha! Why the surprise? I do tend to disagree with you about fiscal issues having to do with helping the less fortunate. I think the teacher pay thing is different somehow, but I can't quite put my finger on why. I just think the whole $1.50/hr thing is sensationalist and reeks of "oooh, validate me and what I do" and that bugs me. Similar to the "if SAHM earned a salary, it would be $1 million" thing.
Most don't, which is why you have a ton of people with $100k of student debt with a degree in basket weaving complaining about how they work at starbucks.
See I don't encounter a ton of this myself. There are a few, but either you're the type to play the victim card or not. If they weren't "woe is me!" about that it would just be something else.
Read the "I am the 99%" website. There are a lot of these. Some I legitimately feel sorry for (got sick, etc etc) but there are a lot of 20/30 somethings complaining about how they went to college, got a bullsh!t degree and can't pay their bills.
Right and they'd get an eye roll from me too, but it's not like that is a representative sample of 20/30 somethings is my point.
I also don't feel like people whose bad situation is a result of their own bad choices deserve no compassion at all though. It's still a person who is struggling every single day and I'm sure they wish they'd done things differently too. (this is not to say I think their student loans should be forgiven, because I don't, but I do think that we can find some way to help them find a way to overcome the current situation)
FFFC: I hate changing my clock. I don't get the point of Daylight Savings Time and why I have to adjust my clock twice a year. Let's just average it out- change the clocks 30 minutes one time only then leave them there.
I don't think we should spring forward/fall back at all. Some places don't [Arizona and Hawaii are just examples], and I want to be in one of those places. I know there's some sort of reason why we spring forward/fall back, but still.
I don't know how true this is, but it makes perfect sense to me: I heard once that the reason we do it is because the farmers and ranchers need those extra daylight hours or whatever.
It is impossible to gather cattle in the dark, and typically, you do that kind of thing first thing in the morning. Also, I remember growing up and being excited about it getting dark at 6:00 because my dad would have my sisters and I working on fence or cattle or whatever until dark. I couldn't wait to fall back because that meant we got to stop working earlier.
Geez. That makes it sound like I grew up in the early 1900s. Ha!
It is actually because of farming - it allows them to have more light in the earlier part of the day. For instance, wake up at 7am now and it is pitch black - a farmer can't work when it is pitch black outside. Wake up at 7am two months ago - blazing sun. In AZ, if you wake up at 7am in March, August, and November, the amount of sunlight is exactly the same because of where Arizona is located in the country. Same thing for..Michigan, I think.
AW2: My wedding rings fit again!!!!
FFFC1: Daylight savings annoys me.
FFFC2: A coworker said yesterday she'd be fine with her baby coming next week because "she's already 36 weeks and weighs over 5 lbs so she'd be fine" and she "doesn't want to birth an 8 lb baby!". Her comments made me stabby. It amazes me how naive/ignorant some women are. I wanted to educate her....or slap her, but I didn't. I bit my tongue.
FFFC3: I was late to work today because DH and I had a quickie this morning. Totally worth being a little late to work, IMO.
FFFC4: I'm cohosting a baby shower Sunday and I'm way more excited about eating cake than I should be
No AW, but a FFFC still thinking about the teacher pay thing.
I, too, hate martyring any profession.
However, I think what I get hung up on is why DON'T we want to pay educators more? There are many great teachers who go into the profession because they have a passion for what they're doing and can handle the pay because they have working spouses or are willing to forgo luxury goods. But, don't we want the very best and brightest to do the job? I'm wondering if there are folks who would make AMAZING teachers who look at the salaries, look at the fact that some people just consider them "glorified babysitters", and look at how much disdain some of our own legislators have for them and say, "F(ck this. I'm going to be a financial planner/nurse practitioner/middle manager." How much potential teaching talent are we losing out on because we think teachers and hotel front desk clerks should earn near-equal amounts? With the U.S. falling farther and farther behind in education every year, I think we need to go beyond "Well, you knew what the pay was when you took the job" to get to some real solutions.
That's what it is - the farming. Duh. Thanks for that lesson TJ and puppy.
Another FFFC: I can almost guarantee my microwave and oven clocks will stay an hour ahead for a week. Unless it automatically changes, I'm not messing with it. Also, I know you're supposed to check your smoke alarms when the time changes or whatever...but my apartment complex does quarterly inspections and checks them for me, so I don't check it. Maybe I should though.
I can 100% guarantee I won't have to change any of my clocks because I never changed them in the first place!
AW: Well, my kitchen is done! It looks gorgeous (IMO) and I really love it! Will take pictures and post on Monday. I can't believe it!!
I definitely think they are underpaid, along with most public service professionals (firefighters, police (and not just because this impacts my bank account), etc.). On the flip side, there seems to be only polar opposite views on this. Pretty much everything I've ever seen implies it has to be either practically minimum wage or the salary of an engineerawyer/doctor because WITHOUT TEACHERS THERE WOULD BE NO DOCTORS. (Yes, but if a teacher has an off day, people don't die typically.)
Can we not find some happy medium that recognizes these are educated professionals and also understand the supply and demand aspect of why some professions pay more than others.
