is this poaching?

At my last position, there was a lot of dissatisfaction with management and the direction that they were taking.

That being said, at the company I'm at now, they have openings in several departments, for which I know people at my old company would be more than qualified for.

I still maintain close ties with several of my old colleagues, and would like to refer them to my current company. However, with some of them, I don't have their personal e-mails or phone numbers, just a work e-mail. If I wanted to contact them about openings here, would it be appropriate to contact them through work? I don't want them to get in trouble....

And would this be poaching? It isn't like I'm under a non-compete agreement or anything like that. prohibiting me from recruiting former co-workers. But it's (now) no secret where I work, so if people I used to work with came over here to work, there would be an easy finger to point.  

I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.

  • I wouldn't e-mail, I'd call.

    I don't see that as poaching. They may not get the job, after all. We actually have referral bonuses at our work, and my boss contacted former reports about openings at our company.

  • I would call and ask to catch up over coffee/lunch...then in person you can gage their interest and take it from there. 
  • I would definitely call, and meet up for coffee or lunch.

    If you email, keep it short and sweet........with no mention of job openings at your new position........work emails are NOT private.

  • I would not send an email from a competitors email address.

    I would phone them and tell them there are opportunities at your firm. 

    You can also try creating linkedin connections with them, then contacting them through linkedin.

    This.  DH's former employer actually blocks emails from former employees.  DH can't email any of his former co-workers because the company has a filter to automatically re-route any emails from him to the partners.  He's friends with the IT guy there and he confirmed that this is what they do to anyone who has left the company.  They are paranoid.
