am I crazy?

I am very close with my grandma; I'm her first grandchild and Minibini is her first great-grandchild.  She is 84 and can't really travel anymore, and she lives in San Diego (we are in Boston).  She's very excited to meet the baby and wants us to come out to visit sometime soon.

I have enough FF miles for a free round trip to CA on American, but only during off-peak times, which means school vacations and such are out, and that doesn't leave many times when I could get out there.  I am off on maternity leave until December 5th.  We can stay with my grandma while there and she is willing to pay for me to rent a car.

Would I be crazy to take Minibini to CA for a few days (by myself--DH has to work) within the next couple of weeks?  He'll be under a month old.  He doesn't have any health problems and I am pretty much recovered from my c-section.  I've heard it's easier to fly with babies when they are younger, and right now he certainly is easy, he sleeps almost all day.  The next time I'd be able to go out there would be next summer and by then he will be 9-10 months old and probably much more of a handful.

WWYD?

  • I would ask pedi.  Planes are so germy and he is so little.

Good idea.  Actually we are seeing him this afternoon so I will ask then.

Normally I would be all go and have fun but since he was a preemie and he is so small I would definitely talk to the pedi. I would probably wait til his first immunizations, which is at 2 months.

  • If the pedi does ok it I say go for it though!  It was more stressful for me to fly with quint at 5 months than for him :)

Also you won't really have to deal with jet lag because he probably wakes every 10 seconds, huh?

Actually at this point I often have to wake him up to feed him every 3-4 hours.  The kid sleeps like a log.  Hope it lasts :)

This. If he was even just a month or so older I'd totally do it, but it's flu season and planes are sooooooo germy.

This. But I'm paranoid like that. Our first trip is in a few weeks - she'll be almost 8 months actual, 6.5 adjusted. Even a month ago I wouldn't have felt comfortable flying with her, but again, that's just me.

  • I would ask your pedi (which I see you are doing this afternoon). If the pedi oks it, then I would go.
  • Update: pedi says it is no problem to take Minibini on the plane. Now I just have to figure out if I'm brave enough to do it!
  • That's good news!  If it were me, I'd try to wait until after Thanksgiving.  IME airfare (and crowds) usually dip way down b/w T-giving and Xmas-- so that might make things less chaotic for you.  Good luck w/ your decision!

FWIW, I first met my nephew when he was 28 days old (we actually celebrated his "month-day" during the visit)... they flew from San Antonio, TX to WMass w/o a hitch (he was born about 3wks before his due date and was on the smallish side... abt 5lbs).

  • I totally think you can handle it! If he really is sleeping well, as long as you get a bassinet seat for the flight and do all the handy tricks (nursing or bottle at take off and landing, boarding early, etc) it should be fine.  The plane is like one big white noise machine for a baby that age.  That and getting spoiled by a great-ma will probably be pretty fun.  Smile

Domestic flights don't usually have bassinets do they? If I go I guess I'll take his car seat to use in the rental car and maybe if there's an empty seat by me I can use it on the plane? Hmm...
