What new vacuum/broom would you get?

We just moved into a house that is all tile downstairs and mostly carpet upstairs (and on the stairs themselves). We have two area rugs downstairs that will need some sort of vacumming, but I suppose I could get away with just a good broom on the tile. All the brooms at Home Depot and the like do not seem to work that great. Is there a brand you'd recommend?

I was debating getting an Electrolux stick vacuum from Costco for use downstairs. Today I lugged my big vacuum downstairs and it was a pain - doable, but not something I can do for quick jobs. We don't have pets, but with a 2 year old crumbs and dirt seem to disperse everywhere!
