clicky poll: how many states have you visited?

My mom and uncles started a contest when they were younger to see who could go to all 50 states first (my uncle eventually won by secretly flying from California to Arkansas and back--he didn't tell his siblings he was going lest they try to beat him to it by hitting the states they'd missed!)  My sisters and I decided a few years ago to try to do the same contest.

So I'm wondering how many states you have been to.  If you did this contest in your family, would you be winning? :)

  • Only 10 (+ DC).  I have been to way more countries than states.

    'murican FAIL.

  • Joining marching band greatly added to my state count, both directly and indirectly.

  • I'd like to make it to all 50.  I'm at 38... have some harder-to-reach places down (Alaska and Hawaii) but am missing lots of midwest/north central region.

  • I'm at 37. I have Alaska but I'm missing Hawaii, a bit of the midwest, and 2 or 3 NE states.

  • We'd like to make it to all 50 at some point.  I'm at 20, which I think is pretty good considering I grew up in Canada.

  • 14+ DC.  And I'm really lucky to be a New Englander, just because it increased the number of states I've visited quickly!

  • I think I am at about 20ish - DH, SIL and I played this game this past summer, and they basically only have about 5 states left to visit! We even went on a road trip when we got so bored in Kansas to get to a few states we'd never been to. I don't know how they managed to go to all these States when they grew up overseas all their lives, but anyway, they beat me, by A LOT! :)

Not counting layovers.  Went to band competitions, football games, and bowl games in many states.

I'm only in the mid 20s though.

  • I have been to about 20 states, no including flight layovers. I figure that is pretty good for a Canadian :)
  • About 25. I'm not counting layovers but I am counting drive throughs if we stopped to see something. For instance, I know that I've driven through Delaware on a trip but I don't remember a thing about it, so I didn't count it.

  • I'm at 25 but we always counted that you had to be outside an airport and have a meal :-) I think I'm a couple more if we're counting drive-throughs (went on a cross-country trip at 22)

I 'think' I'd beat most of my famiy but DH and his whole family have me beat by a long ways. They went on tons of road trips growing up.

I have 47.  And it is all about road-tripping it.  For this reason, I have never been to Michigan, Hawaii, and Alaska.

  • I've been to Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Missouri, Illinois, California, Colorado, Hawaii, and Virginia (I had to type them out to remember.  I think that's all)

We plan to do a lot more traveling around the US when we move back.  Hopefully I'll add to this list.

  • I have been to...
New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, Texas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, California, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii...

I guess that's 44. My family travelled around the US a lot when I was younger. I want to visit the Northeast!

Yeah, I don't count lay-overs.  It doesn't make sense to, IMO... I've been to O'Hare a bunch, but I've actually never been to Chicago (although, I have been to IL, just not Chicago... know it's not a "state" but still would like to get to that city).

    image
  • I just made it to 10 by counting a layover in Chicago this past July.  We missed our flight and had to stay overnight (really like 6 hours) in a hotel so I did leave the airport.

  • Wow 13 states plus CD, but I have been to 15 countries and that will be 16 in December after we go to Germany.  We went to Canada for our road trips!
  • I've been to 46. Just missing Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, and Delaware!  I've taken 3 very long road trips so that's how I got most of my states.
  • I'm well impressed with the Canadians!
    imageBabyFruit Ticker
  • I counted 27, but I'm not counting the states that we just drove through on our roadtrip and didn't really stop to 'see' anything - if I counted those too I'd add at least another 6-7 states :)

  • I'm at 38.  Missing HI, MT, ND, SD, IA, WI, NE, KS, OK, WV, ME, and AR.  Really would like to see MT.  And do some cheese tours in WI.  And lobstering in ME.

  • I would be far from winning.  My siblings all live in the US and have more of an opportunity to visit various states.  Two have done the great western road trip and all of them have been to about ten states more than I have.

    ETA: I've been to 25.

  • I'm impressed ktkl and mrsbini!

I would be winning against my siblings but my parents have been to way more states than me...  The perks of working for an airline.

  • wow, some of you have been to almost all 50, very impressive!

I got up to 19 but can't remember for sure if I've stood in the dirt in Delaware, but I think I probably have. I've driven through it a bunch of times and I grew up like half an hour from Delaware, so I gave myself that one and voted based on 20. I'm also preeeetty sure I've been to NC but not 100% positive.

  • 33 or 34 visited so far including Alaska and Hawaii.
  • Embarrassed Only one!

I went to NYC last year and it was the first time I set foot in the US...
