The past few years I've made green bean casserole just because it's tradition, but I've realized that only about 2 of the 10 guests actually love it. I want to switch it up this year - what veggies do you look forward to at Thanksgiving?
My best idea so far is bacon wrapped asparagus or green beans. Thoughts? Here's what else we'll have:
Turkey
Ham
Sausage, apple and cranberry stuffing - http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Sweet-Corn-Tomalito/Detail.aspx
Mashed potatoes and gravy
Biscuits
Sweet corn tomalito - http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Sweet-Corn-Tomalito/Detail.aspx
I usually do sweet potato casserole and cranberry sauce too, but those don't seem too popular - I think I'll skip them.
And of course, plenty of wine and pies!
Re: Need a veggie to serve at Thanksgiving
I think this year I am trying the homemade version of green bean casserole...probably just serve a steam in bag corn and brussel sprouts as well. Glazed carrots is another idea.
I eat at my mother's and she does the cooking but all I have to say is I love green bean casserole.
Does your family like squash? I enjoy that in the fall.
we always have squash and turnip
I don't like either, but they both go well.
These are awesome! (Ina Garten's Roasted Brussels Sprouts). Am serving these for our Thanksgiving as well.

Sorry I don't know how to make it "clicky".
A few ideas, we always have peas- open a bag of frozen peas, steam, and toss in some butter. I love glazed carrots so that's also a simple idea.
If you want green beans, these are awesome. I've made the day before too and baked the day of. You can fudge the temp a little too. These proscuitto wrapped asaparagus are also really good.
Ina Garten has a fantastic roasted butternut squash recipe I can get if you are interested. It's really easy, but very good.
Thanks for the yummy ideas! I'm leaning toward green bean bundles and will probably do a test run this week
This is a favorite at our house too.
Glazed carrots is one of my favs!
Love the asparagus idea. There was a cheesy cauliflower casserole that I had once and it was great. Sorry I don't know the recipe.
This is one of my favorite ways to make green beans. It's easy enough to make on a weeknight, but is "fancy" enough for a holiday spread.
I don't have the recipe with me, but this is so easy that I don't even need to refer to it anymore. Saute 1 finely chopped shallot or a small chunk of onion and 1 or 2 cloves of finely chopped garlic until they're soft and just starting to brown, then add a half cup or so of chopped or slivered almonds or pine nuts and toss until they're lightly toasted. In the meantime, steam a half pound or so of green beans, mix them in with the shallot/garlic/almond mixture, and toss it all together for a couple minutes. Season it all with salt and pepper and serve.

Oh nice. I think I'll try it with bacon sometime. What is red onion vinegar?

roasted Brussels spouts
4 cups Brussels sprouts you pan fry them in about 2-4 tbs butter. Once they are almost soft take them off the heat and put in casserole dish. add your fav cheese and bake at 325 for 10 mins. take out sprinkle bacon bits on top and enjoy.
