Stockings

... the stockings were hung by the chimney with care.......

what goes in your stockings?

I'm having the hardest time deciding what to put in my husbands!!!

AND my daughters!!! (she is 3)

Re: Stockings

  • I always put an orange, some nuts (in shell) and a peppermint stick, for tradition's sake. Then I put small gifts, little funny things.

  • Last year I filled MH's stocking with candy, batteries, a little golf multi-tool, a voucher for a magazine subscription, a bottle opener, and I get him an ornament every year.

  • Last year, and I'll do it again this year, I put fun sized bags of goldfish grahams in DS's stocking. OMG, you would have thought he won the lottery! I think I also added a coloring book and some new crayons. This year I have "big boy" underwear to try to get him excited about the potty. #SuchAMomMove

DH's was mostly mini snickers bars.

  • For DH I put in things like chapstick, buttermints, chocolate, a special ornament, and goofy things such as Legos.

  • Lottery scratch off tickets are huge in my family.  That is about the only time we buy them.

  • I usually put cigars, small bags of gourmet coffee, candy and a few gag gifts in DH's stocking.
  • I typically fill DH's stocking with jelly belly jelly beans (bulk bins at Target rock!), dress socks, golf balls and tees, lip balm, travel sized toiletry items (DH travels a lot and they come in handy!), sometimes goofy stuff like silly putty or that kind of thing but not typically.  I did give DH some scratch off lottery tickets one year - he won five bucks from it.  :)
  • We alternate between two different traditions: 1) we have a $15 limit and you have to buy 3 things and 2) is going to the dollar store and finding 5 silly things and getting one real thing for around $10.

In the past DH has gotten lots of candy, cigars, lighters, a back scratcher, lottery tickets and even dvd's from the $5 bin at Walmart.

  • We don't put anything in our stockings at home.

At the ILs, we stopped putting stuff in stockings for adults.  When we did, it was things like socks, lotion, toothpaste...practical stuff for the most part.

MIL still does them for the kids.  They get chocolate, socks, a small toy or two, and usually an ornament.

  • All kinds of things!  If it fits in a stocking...it's game!  I definately try to buy good things (no junky stuff) that is useful/wanted/appreciated.

I always put in chocolate letters for all the neices/nephews (actually a St Nicholas tradition in Holland, but I do it on Christmas Day instead).

I actually don't have a stocking...LOL.  But I do get stuff for Dh...cufflinks, ties, work/travel items, special candy he likes etc

My sisters and I do a stocking exchange the week between Christmas and New Years.  We get together for lunch or dinner and exchange them.  It's a lot of fun.  In our family we don't give stockings to the adults, but somehow we were always finding good things for stockings for each other...

  • I usually give my kids an orange, some candy, chapstick, and art supplies.  H gets an orange, candy, and some little gifts (a paperback, golf tees, fancy coffees).

Always!  And a new penny in the toe every year

  • GUM!  I swear DH is addicted to it, lol.  Gummies & chocolate, lotto tix, aftershave & face lotion, chapstick, "corn huskers" hand lotion, hair gel, new work ties, dress socks, a new baseball cap, pack of men's undershirts, boxer briefs, "love coupons", new coffee travel mug, etc.

Btw, I haven't given DH all of this stuff at one time, just over the years.

  • Stockings are a big tradition in our family - my parents fill them for everyone.  They are a favorite part of the holiday.

Usually it's small stuff from Walgreens (Dad goes a couple days before Christmas) - M & M's, lip balm, gum, razors, socks, lotto scratch offs, little toys, orange, etc.  I'll add stuff to my husband's like Subway coupons, pens, Halva, or whatever I find in the dollar bin at Target.

  • I always do a new toothbrush for my kids. It is usually a character one or a spin one. During the rest of the year, I buy the cheap ones in a multi-pack, so that is a big deal for them. Also, band aids. They love all the character and decorative ones.

For my husband I do lottery scratch tix. Also gift cards so he can eat lunch out instead of bringing once in a while.

  • My favorite part of Christmas gifts has always been stockings. My mom would go to stores like Claire's where they usually have deals like buy one get one half off hair accessories, or buy two get one free earrings, and put them in my stocking, along with candy, dollar store toys, an orange or pomegranate to fill the foot part of the stocking, cheap little nail polishes, lip glosses, chap sticks, body sprays, hair brush, hair bands, underwear, etc. Basically any cheap girly thing she could find.

For my husband, I like to put things like gum, candy, candy canes, shaving stuff, Ax body spray or shower gel, boxers, batteries, $5-$10 Starbucks or iTunes gift card, CD, socks, funny shot glass, dollar store word find or Sudoku books, etc. This year I'm even putting some lingerie in his stocking since we don't have kids and won't be opening them in front of anyone. I just have fun with it!
