I'm thinking of asking for an e-reader for xmas, but have not begun to do any research. Which one would you recommend and why? Do they all work for online lending libraries? Do any of them have a backlit option for reading in the dark?
Re: Recommend your e-reader
I love my kindle. I've had a nook. Hated it and returned it. I also have a kobo reader. It's okay. My kindle is older and doesn't work for library books, which is what the kobo is for. I hear the newer kindles do library lending, but I can't guarantee that's accurate.
Backlit blows. I have a kandle for my kindle (ha, I like saying that). It's a super great clip on light - way better than the first light I had.

I love my kindle, I loved it so much I got my mum one for her birthday last year. I love that I can read my book on my kindle, and if I leave it at home and want to read my book I can still read it on my phone, ipad or mac.
For an e-reader you don't want backlit as it's what hurts your eyes, you can get a Kindle cover that has a reading light in it for when you want to read in the dark. I'd go for one of those if I was to get a new one.
This. I love library lending.
I love my kindle. Next time I'm in the states I'm going to see about the library lending option too.
But I can read on it for hours since it's not backlit. It's so light and it's amazing for travelling. It's one of the best things I've ever bought.

I have a Kindle (the original one that came out a few years ago) but really I mostly read using the Kindle app on my iPhone these days. Some people don't like that because it's such a small screen, but I have read entire books on it and it hasn't bothered me.
The Kindle Fire looks cool though. If I had lots of extra money I'd get myself one of those
Another vote for Kindle. I absolutely love mine -- had it for about three years. It's great for READING. It does a few other things (like minimal websurfing or email), but not very well. But it is fantastic for READING, which backlit devices like the iPad are not. It's amazing to go away for a vacation and only pack my kindle, instead of bringing 5-6 books and worrying that I'll run out of things to read. It's small enough to pop in my purse if I know I'm going to be waiting for something (like at the dentist's office), and it's great to take to the gym to read while I'm on the elliptical (I just bump the font size up a notch).
I also have a Kandle reading light -- but I don't think they sell those anymore...at least I haven't been able to find one anywhere.
I have the Nook color. It is backlit but I have it on a setting so that I read on a grey page with black or white lettering and it's much easier on the eyes. I like the backlit because I can read without a light, but it's a PITA for reading outside. On vacations I wish I had a Kindle or Nook original because I can't read the color in the sun.
Nook also has apps for the iPad, computer and iPhone. Barnes and Noble has hundreds and hundreds of free books too, which I really like. I vote Nook, not color.
