Recommend your e-reader

I'm thinking of asking for an e-reader for xmas, but have not begun to do any research.  Which one would you recommend and why?  Do they all work for online lending libraries? Do any of them have a backlit option for reading in the dark?

Re: Recommend your e-reader

  • I love my kindle. I've had a nook. Hated it and returned it. I also have a kobo reader. It's okay. My kindle is older and doesn't work for library books, which is what the kobo is for. I hear the newer kindles do library lending, but I can't guarantee that's accurate.

Backlit blows. I have a kandle for my kindle (ha, I like saying that). It's a super great clip on light - way better than the first light I had.

  • I really like my Kindle. 1) It's NOT back lit. So much like reading an actual page in a book. I look at a screen so much for work that when I get to read the last thing I want is to have to deal with more computer scren. 2) Holds no fascination for DH or BabyD. No color pictures, no video, and I refuse to let DH know that it even has the capacity for games. They have their toys, the Kindle is mine.

  • Love my Kindle! And now that there is library lending I love it even more. The library lending is really easy with my library's system. My library has tons of children's book to lend out to which is neat to me.

  • I had the first edition nook and absolutely loved it. Now I have the second edition touch screen and I love it even more. Mine isn't backlit (I have an iPad to read on if I want that) and can read library books. Now you can buy books overseas too. I prefer the nook over the kindle hands down.

  • I love my kindle, I loved it so much I got my mum one for her birthday last year. I love that I can read my book on my kindle, and if I leave it at home and want to read my book I can still read it on my phone, ipad or mac.

For an e-reader you don't want backlit as it's what hurts your eyes, you can get a Kindle cover that has a reading light in it for when you want to read in the dark. I'd go for one of those if I was to get a new one.

  • I love my kindle. Next time I'm in the states I'm going to see about the library lending option too.

But I can read on it for hours since it's not backlit. It's so light and it's amazing for travelling. It's one of the best things I've ever bought.

  • I have a Kindle (the original one that came out a few years ago) but really I mostly read using the Kindle app on my iPhone these days.  Some people don't like that because it's such a small screen, but I have read entire books on it and it hasn't  bothered me.

The Kindle Fire looks cool though.  If I had lots of extra money I'd get myself one of those :)

  • Another vote for Kindle.  I absolutely love mine -- had it for about three years.  It's great for READING.  It does a few other things (like minimal websurfing or email), but not very well.  But it is fantastic for READING, which backlit devices like the iPad are not.    It's amazing to go away for a vacation and only pack my kindle, instead of bringing 5-6 books and worrying that I'll run out of things to read.   It's small enough to pop in my purse if I know I'm going to be waiting for something (like at the dentist's office), and it's great to take to the gym to read while I'm on the elliptical (I just bump the font size up a notch).

I also have a Kandle reading light -- but I don't think they sell those anymore...at least I haven't been able to find one anywhere.

  • I have the Nook color.  It is backlit but I have it on a setting so that I read on a grey page with black or white lettering and it's much easier on the eyes.  I like the backlit because I can read without a light, but it's a PITA for reading outside.  On vacations I wish I had a Kindle or Nook original because I can't read the color in the sun.

Nook also has apps for the iPad, computer and iPhone.  Barnes and Noble has hundreds and hundreds of free books too, which I really like.  I vote Nook, not color.

  • Any thoughts on the kindle vs. kindle touch?

Not sure. The touch just came out. I would be curious how responsive the touch is. I haven't see it in person yet but I've seen the cases for it at Target and it's smaller since it does not have a keyboard. I would just look for reviews and see what they say about the touch. Cnet.com is usually great or I like using YouTube to look up electronics.
