Any moving tips?

So excited for next week! We close on our current home Tuesday morning and our new home on Tuesday afternoon.Any last minute tips/hints/things you wish you had done?

Re: Any moving tips?

  • we have moved quite a bit and we realized the more organized we are when packing the better it all goes....have a game plan. Plan what heaviest objects get moved first and where they go in the new place...we use post it notes to label :)

same thing with boxes...label the outsides to whats in them and where they go in the new house (like what room).

  • I agree, label your boxes! I wish I had done a better job with that. I hate having to rip them open to see what's inside and then take them to their proper place to be unpacked. It would be so much easier to have them labeled and just know!

  • Bring post-its to label the doors of rooms. You may know which room is which, but the movers/your friends will ask you every 5 seconds which room is X's room, which is Y's room, etc.

Bring toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning stuff, paper cups, etc in your car.  And light bulbs.  Nothing sucks worse than having to use the bathroom while unloading and realizing the previous occupant took all of the toilet paper with them and you have no towel out to wash your hands, etc.

Look up the numbers of things and load them into your phone that you may need that day...utilities, pizza delivery, etc. (may only apply if you are moving out of town I suppose).

All the above!  Some of the movers the company hired on my last move could not speak English real well so that would really help with the post-its.

And our moving truck was 6 hours late to our new home.  Luckily my parents met us at our new home and brought the necessary toiletries.  Also if you have pets, pack their necessary things with you - something I also learned the hard way when our truck was late.

Also, they stack the boxes like crazy so make sure you have lots of packing material for your fragiles to keep from breaking.
