Relocating to Norfolk and in need of advice

My fiance is in the navy and is stationed in Norfolk, Va.  I will be moving to the area following our wedding at the end of March. We are trying to figure out a good neighborhood to live in and after talking to other military spouses I am  told living on the other side of the connecting bridge to the other side of Hampton Roads is not a good idea.  Does anyone know of any safe neighborhoods within close proximity to restaraunts, shopping and good schools? I love the feel of downtown Norfolk.  I am a certified high school and middle school social studies and English as a second Language teacher and will be looking for teaching positions in the area.  Any advice would be great!

Thanks so much,

Amy

Re: Relocating to Norfolk and in need of advice

  • Ghent is a beautiful area if you want to be downtown.

I would not live on the other side of the HRBT if he's stationed at Norfolk.  Traffic is horrible.

  • I would not live in the Hampton Roads area.  I just relocated here from NY in October.  My husband also works in Norfolk.  The traffic in the morning to Norfolk is horrible. We ended up moving to Virginia Beach.
  • My husband is Navy stationed in Norfolk as well. We decided to live in the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake- about 20 minutes from NOB and we love it here. Close to shopping and restaurants, and the Chesapeake school system is great!

  • This post is a little old, but I'll comment anyway.  My husband is also in the Navy, and we recently relocated to Norfolk as well.  We have lived in Ghent and are currently living downtown.  We love the location because mostly everything we need we can walk to.
  • I'll add in my late two-cents too. If you're working in Norfolk, I suggest living in Norfolk. Traffic getting into the city is hanus. If you're coming from the outside and have to go through the tunnel, you're in trouble. I agree with others in suggesting Ghent. However, Ghent can get sort of pricey. Chesapeake has a few nice areas, and Virginia Beach is just a short drive away. Virginia Beach is also cheaper.

Good luck! The Hampton Roads area is a great place to live. Yes, we have traffic issues, but there's so much to do around here.
