begining quilting my butt..

lol...

So I signed up for a begining quilting class at the quilt store by me.  It is only 2 three hour classes so that should have been my warning right there I think, but they assured me that me and my inexperience could do it.  So I find out at class we just do examples and then have to do the quilt at home.  Basically making a placemat in class and the quilt (a rail fence quilt) at home.  I did more sewing in class on saturday then I had total up to that point.

Now I have till saturday to finish the top center part of the quilt.  I spent a good portion of Sunday cutting all the strips and then started sewing.  I sewed a bunch last night and have all the long strips together, now I have to cut them into blocks and sew all the blocks together.

It's like a full time job!  I wish we just had more than a week to do it because I think that's all I'm going to be able to do outside of work this week!  Just wanted to whine a little bit.  :)  I'm excited to get it done though, I hope it comes out niceas it's for my baby boy due in Feb:)

  • Ohhh! Good luck. You have to PIP when you are finished!!!

  • Don't get discouraged!  It starts to go lots faster once you've made a couple of quilts.  I remember how frustrated I was with the first one I made, but it was totally worth it when the parents opened it at their baby shower- they were so happy and touched that all of the time and frustration seemingly melted away.  I'm sure seeing your little one curled up in the quilt you made will give you the same feeling!

  • I have now made 6 or 7 baby quilts and still get frustrated around the time I am finishing piecing the last blocks, and when I am almost done quilting, and then when I am pinning the binding. It just takes so long, and by the time I get to those points, I am usually getting bored with that quilt and want to move on to the next one!

But it is all worth it when you finish one! I just finished a cute, simple quilt for a friend (I'll post pics soon) and it is so nice to be done.

  • If you're not sick of looking at it by the time you're finished putting the top together, the pattern may be too easy for you! I've made quite a few quilts (baby up through queen sized) and it still amazes me how much longer they all take than I expect them to! A week is ambitious, but you can do it.
  • Stick with it!  It does get easier!  Get done what you can this week, but don't stress about it.  When quilting becomes a task instead of fun, you lose the purpose!

All projects take longer than you would think.  After this quilt, I would start working on a baby quilt.  I would also recommend more classes or try a block of the month club.  Different instructors have different ways of explaining things.

You can do this and you will only improve your skills.

  • Thanks!  Yea I think I just don't like that it's taken the fun out of learning because it's a huge task!  I had said something at the class and she said well people don't want to come to a 5 or 6 week long class and it would cost like $90 to do the whole class.  I said I would rather do that!  Especially when it is touted as beginning!  The other women in class were actually more helpful showing me tricks with my machine and what stitch to use and how to get a 1/4 inch stitch.  It's a Bernina store and I have a brother so she just wanted to put down my machine!  For 130 bucks versus the cheapest Bernina they had (350) I thought it was a better machine to see if I'd even like to sew!  Sorry I'll try to stop venting!
