I need vacation ideas!

DH and I never went on a honeymoon, and I finally have him convinced that we need a vacation together.  We are trying to come up with affordable vacation ideas.  We want a place that neither one of us have been (which I know would be hard for you all to suggest).  Neither of us have been to Washington DC, but we are going in January, and I want to get away from the cold, not go somewhere else where it is cold!!  Any suggestions on affordable vacation ideas where it is warm??  Or...where is there a good website that I can find great deals on vacation spots?

Re: I need vacation ideas!

  • New Orleans, Key West, Hilton Head, South Carolina, Savannah, Georgia. Also, a friend of mine goes to Cabo San Lucas fairly often and makes it affordable.

  • H and I went to Cancun in January a few years ago. The weather was perfect. I know you can typically find affordable lodging and activities there. Also, what about a cruise? We booked Carnival last year leaving from Galveston, Texas and traveled to Cozumel and Progreso for five days. I think it was approximately $420 per person, all-inclusive (except alcohol).
  • Groupon always has good getaway deals
  • Mexico--You can get some great deals for all inclusives which may be cheaper than staying in the states.  Omaha travel here in omaha sends out weekly deals and some of them are pretty good.
  • If you're looking to stay in the country: San Diego (the gas lamp district) is easy to find a good deal in; Miami (especially if you book "last minute); Sarasota, FL (you can travel direct from Omaha to St.Pete-a little North of Sarasota); Little Rock.

  • We've used http://www.cheapcaribbean.com/ for a trip to Mexico and had a good experience.

I've used expedia to book fight (nonrefundable), hotel (refundable), and car (refundable) a few months before and then canceled the hotel and car and booked last minute rates the week before we left.

We are using the travel omaha company PP mentioned for a trip to Hawaii next year and have had a good experience so far.
