I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the way she dismisses "fruit fly research" as totally unnecessary and having nothing to do with the public.

I think one of the best things about McCain losing would be sending her hick ass back to Alaska. ?I don't respect her at all, and I don't understand anyone who actually likes her.

The funny thing is that had I met her in AK, I probably would've thought she was more like me, and not as much of a hick as most (no offense Alaskans). But seeing her on the national stage, her hickness (?) really stands out.

I heard about that comment and it definitely raised some eyebrows among my friends, but I decided that most people don't understand the genetic advances we've made because of fruit flies so she probably thought it was a safe dig.

Yea, I lost myshit last night when I saw that.  As someone who has studied the nervous system in organisms from mice to goldfish to minnows to frogs, and who knows a lot of researchers that do seminal work in fruit flies, c. elegans (tiny round worms), yeast and bacteria... her statement is enormously offensive and betrays yet ANOTHER area of incompetence and lack of understanding.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but America's standing in the scientific community would be even more imperilled under the McCain/Palin admin than the Bush admin. DH and i just might move to Canada in that case.  For real.

It's amazing to think we could slide even further than under Bush, but with her, I could see it happening. ?epphd, I think you'd fit in in Geneva ?That's where I'd aim if I were still in research.?

I have to hope this is wrong, I know all about fruit flies and I only took Biology in high school and genetics in college (they made me take a life science) and I know about all the research associated with fruit flies - anybody who has ever taken a biology class should know about fruit flies.  Stupid dumb people.

I'm with the scientists on this one - killing science also kills engineering; if you take those two aspects out of the US economy it will disappear.

If you are, then I'm right there with you. And I say that as someone who has a bachelor's in journalism from a decent, but not overly prestigious, college.

Edited "for" to "from" because typos are embarrassing when made in a post declaring oneself as holding a journalism degree.
