Upcoming Deployment

What do you all do to stay busy while your husbands are deployed? I will be coming up on my first deployment this Winter. Thank you all!

Re: Upcoming Deployment

  • My H is gone. I've been getting into a lot more FB arguments, watching a lot o' Lockdown on Netflix, and working even more than usual. Also, I eat what I want. I'm pretty psyched for Jersey Shore to premiere again as well. Also, I've started working out hard again. Well, I did yesterday.

Work or school are generally the bomb diggity for distraction.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • We have dogs, so when my husband is gone, I sign up for more training classes, be they obedience, agility, AKC CGC, etc.  My fluffiest pup and I start Foundations of Agility in just a few weeks, and I'm going to do my darndest to finally get around to doing his CGC test.  He's been ready since...oh, 2009, but the certificate just wasn't a priority.  Fluffbug is most attached to my husband and I know he'll have the hardest time with my husband's absence, so socializing him well is of utmost importance.  Plus, I dig talking to other dog people.

When I'm deployed/TDY, my husband builds things, spends tons of time researching things he dreams of buying, and spends lots of time helping his buddies with their projects.  He's more of an introvert than I am, so sometimes I worried that he wasn't visiting enough people.

  • While my H has been gone these past 6 months I've been working 3 jobs, playing a lot of World of Warcraft/League of Legends, set a goal to read 200 books- and did it, sending tons of emails and care packages to H, and I spend what's left of my time hanging out with my friends/family.

Between all that stuff I feel like time has flown by, and it won't be too much longer until H gets back!

  • We have four kids, so they keep me pretty busy between school and sports.

I volunteer with a local rescue and with our FRG.  I read a lot more.  I watch all the girly movies he could care less about.  I take the kids on road trips pretty often.  I've convinced a few of my friends who have never camped to go on a camping trip with us durring this next deployment.  I send a ton of emails, letters and care packages.

Take some ideas from the ladies here and then find a few more things.  What are your hobbies?  Take a few classes to learn more about those hobbies or learn a new hobby.  Take up running or take an excersise class.  Take some college courses.  What ever you do, get out of the house as much as possible.  Staying couped up in the house will only make you depressed.

Nights are usually the hardest for me.  When J is gone, I'm on here almost all night.  Come here and hang out with us.

  • I SAH with our DD. TO distract myself, we go out as much as possible. Which is a little difficult bc she has BPD and can't really be out in crowds.

My friends and I do Taco Wednesdays where we all bring a taco ingredient and just get together to hang out and chat. Half of our husbands are currently deployed so it's nice to distract us all LOL

Like PPs, I read a lot and watch a lot of shows on Demand/ Netflix. I started working out every day (Jillian Michaels is the devil in spandex) and I walk the dog twice a day.  Also, I spend waaaay too much time on the nest/ bump when DD naps/ goes to bed.

  • Ditto PP. Right now I am unemployed with no kids, so I have a TON of time to fill. I volunteer on base and have a Little Sister through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America program. We are still new to this base so I have been attending a ton of Spouse events.

I also scrapbook like crazy. During my H's last TDY I did our wedding and minimoon. It's a nice time to do it, since I don't have a craft area so it takes up my island and dinner table. My goal is to finish our wedding, plus start one for H.

I also tackled a ton of house projects. (ie.  Sanded some end tables then repainted them.) I've made a list on Pinterest of projects I'm going to tackle too.

It's almost the holidays, if you are crafty you can start making presents for people. My little and I are going to make Christmas cards for the troops.

Oh and I bake like crazy. I'm trying to bake through a cool little dessert cookbook I found. I'm working on experimenting with dinner recipes as well.

  • Thank you all for your responses. it's all great advise and much appreciated!

  • Thanks for your response:) This response was most helpful. I have a 12 yr old so she def keeps me busy, but road trips and maybe taking up a new hobby would be perfect ideas! Thanks again!
