Front Porch Plants/Decorations?

Good morning everyone,

I need to find a pretty plant or something to place on our front porch, by our front door. I was thinking of goint to Home Depot, Walmart, or a place like that to find something. Does anyone have recommendations for what type of plant/decoration I should get? If I get a plant, I'd want something that lives for a long time (forever?) and is easy to take care of. I don't have much a green thumb but I'd want to be able to care for whatever I buy and keep it looking nice. Thanks for any help!

  • Poinsettias are perfect for this time of year and are hearty all year long.  I do nto have a green thumb and I have never managed to kill one.

  • Succulents are pretty easy too. And you can do a lot with them.

  • Knockout roses are super easy to take care of and they smell pretty, too.
  • Do you buy special planters for them or just put them out as is?

For the knockouts I would buy a planter that is a little larger than the pot it is in. Transfer it, water it daily. :)

  • I have a white birds of paradise by my front door. I'm not sure if you are looking for a larger plant or something smaller but I love how tropical it looks. It needs to be watered occasionally, and fertilized once or twice a year, but it is very easy to maintain.

  • On our front walk, we have two large planters with birds of paradise surrounded by purple queen. I never water them and they do just fine.

I love bromillads, especially in container gardens. Some other options off the top of my head are dracenas, ferns, spider plants, corn plants and spathaphilliums.
