any thoughts on the Penn State situation?
You can't turn on ESPN or read a sports section without some discussion of it.
I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.
Re: any thoughts on the Penn State situation?
Dh just sent me this.
I think it's heartbreaking to see this happen to Joe Pa. I don't think anyone will ever really know all of the events that took place and the truth behind it all. But, it seems that Joe Pa did what he could to try to bring this issue to the attention of his superiors and they didn't do anything about it until it came to the media. Who knows if he knew all the details enough to possibly take it to authorities, etc.
It is definitely sickening to know discover the scandal, but I honestly don't think that Joe Pa did anything wrong. I hate that this is going to taint his legacy.
I was out of the country on vacation so I don't know all the developments, but from what I have gathered is that Paterno did what he could, but I don't know enough (yet) to know if he know anything at all (if that makes sense).
It's just a shame that he couldn't leave on his terms.
ETA: Okay, I just read on ESPN about the situation. Oh god, that is just awful. If Paterno knew about an indiscretion of that nature with his assistant, it should have been addressed immediately.
I am not heartbroken for Joe Pa. At all. I'm heartbroken for those kids who didn't have a single advocate in an entire administration, and for any other kids affected since that time because of the inaction of that administration.
He needs to step down like, yesterday.
I completely agree.
I don't know how people can say that he did all that he could..doing all he could do would have been contacting the authorities, not watching the administration cover it all up.

This, exactly.
Ditto to both of you.
JoePa has disgraced himself. For someone who preached about honor and morals, doing the legal minimum should never have been enough for him. I am disgusted at the people crying for him. This happened under his watch, and he did slightly more than nothing and then washed his hands of it.

I live just outside State College and my step-dad graduated from PennState. Obviously our local news is biased and likely skewed a bit.
I've seen people in tears from Paterno's announcement. It's not so much that he's retiring (I mean, c'mon the guy is old as dirt), it's more about the legacy of the whole team that was shattered. Scandal on Paterno = scandal on the whole team, indirectly. Not sure if I got the point across.
I don't follow football, I was just hanging out and decided to post what it's like where I am.

I get that. It isn't his retirement or his leaving, it's the mark on the university and the program as a whole.
It doesn't seem like Paterno "did everything he could." I asked DH what he would do in that situation (since he aspires to be an athletic director someday) and he said that only thing to do it 1) fire the assistant coach, 2) fire the anyone affiliated with a cover-up.
My alma mater (Marquette University) was recently involved in a scandal (not of this magnitude) regarding a sexual assault of a woman by some basketball players. I was very dismayed by the attitude that the student body and the athletic leadership had taken in handling the situation. Consequently, the athletic director has since been fired and they're looking for a new one.
This is probably totally inappropriate, but I hear PennState has a job opening...

LOL inappropriate yes, but true nonetheless!
For those of you following the story. I think this is new news...

I am a Penn State grad. I feel a range of emotions right now. First, I am so, so sad for the victims and for those close to Sandusky (his wife and children). I am so disappointed and can't wrap my mind around why someone didn't contact the police!
I read the grand jury report. It is disgusting. While they are cleaning house, I strongly feel that those who were part of the investigation in 98 or 99 need to be fired from whatever they are doing now too. Sandusky admitted to taking a shower with a kid and giving him a bear hug naked- he was told not to take showers with kids anymore! (To be clear, the incident was reported by the victim's mother to his school and school officials reported it to authorities who conducted the investigation).
I love Joe and what he has done for PSU. These situations happen much more frequently than what we hear in the media. Predators are sick, sick, people that have a way of manipulating everyone around them. They gain the trust of their victims and families. If anything, I hope this brings light to the victimization of children and make people not afraid to report what they may think is happening.
I have so many different thoughts about this whole situation. At first, I was so sad that this could be happening to JoePa. The Legend. THEN, I read the jury report. If that graduate assistant went to JoePa and told him what happened and the nature of it (like he did) and then JoePa told his superiors (like he's required to do), then there is absolutely NO reason for Sandusky to still have had full access to the facilities up until this week. But, instead, the superiors swept it under the rug and didn't contact the police. JoePa should have wondered/asked questions WHY Sandusky was still a common figure on campus and the sidelines? I mean, seriously?! The graduate assistant caught Sandusky anal raping a 10(ish) year old boy in the showers!
It's sickening. There is zero excuse. Every single person who 'touched' this throughout the years should be canned immediately.
I do not like Matt Millen, but his quote on the ESPN segment yesterday was spot on: "If we can't protect our kids, we as a society, are pathetic."
Also, if JoePa is the one who you're most angry with in this whole situation, then you need to take a step back and look at the facts and read the grand jury report.
FTR, I'm not "most angry" with JoePa. I agree with your previous statement that EVERYONE who had knowledge should get the boot.

Oh, I wasn't saying you, in particular. That was just a general sentiment. Someone on my Twitter timeline said something along those lines, and it's the truth, because I "see" a lot of people (online, of course) who are calling for JoePa's head on a platter.
Of course he isn't the one to be "most angry" with..that would be the predator.
However, I still don't get how people can say he did everything he could to help the situation...
TI, IUIs, IVF = c/ps and BFNs
Agreed. I've been watching it pretty closely in part because we are going to Saturday's Penn-State- Nebraska game.
I found the article below interesting.

TTC #1 since 08/11 IUI#2 = BFP!
I agree completely.
Bye bye, JoePa. Coaches are fired over knowing WAY LESS than he did. WAY MORE will come out on this story, this is only the beginning.
I am guilty of this as well. I was so very sad for Joe Pa and then took a step back to think about the poor boys involved. I was so caught up in this happening TO Joe Pa rather than what happened to the victims. It's so sad and sickening. I hope Sandusky burns in hell.
I lurk more on this board than post so I hope you don't mind if I add my 2 cents.
Is Joe P the "worst" person in this situation? Of course not. Sandusky has earned a special place in hell for his actions.
Did Joe P "legally" fullfill his obligation to report? Yes.
Did Joe P "morally" fulfill his obligation? NO. He was aware of the shower incident in 1998 so when the grad student came to him, he should have done more than report and walk away. For a man who hold himself to such "high moral standards" when he saw that NOTHING was being done, he should have pushed for more or...novel idea here...called the police himself.
Joe P chose to quickly wash his hands of the incident. That is NOT what a MORAL person does. A MORAL person does everything in their power to stop what is happening--especially when you KNOW there were prior allegations. Legally, he did all he was required to, but ethically...well, I say he could and SHOULD have done a lot more.
One of my favorite lines from all time is from Matthew McConaughey's character's closing statement in "A Time to Kill." The movie is about a horrid act of violence against a young black child in a very segregated community. He describes the horrible things that occured to the black child victim and then says..."now, imagine she was white."
I dare say for those that say that Joe P did all he should have done...now imagine it was YOUR child.
I do not feel sorry for Joe P. I feel sorry for those boys whose lives were destroyed by a villian that was allowed to freely walk the campus for all these years while so many "moral" men turned the other way.
