Please critique my baby shower menu
I'm hosting a baby shower for my sister-in-law on Saturday and wondering if my menu sounds okay? It will be at 2pm with approximately 15 guests.
- Croissant sandwiches: turkey, ham, roast beef, veggie
- Ham and swiss pinwheels
- Roasted red pepper dip with pretzel crisps and crackers
- Fresh veggie tray
- Deviled eggs
- Chocolate covered strawberries
- Cupcakes
- Punch, coffee and water
I am trying to avoid any foods that need to stay hot. Does this sound sufficient?
Re: Please critique my baby shower menu
You need a salad. Green, pasta or potato would be fine but I just feel like you are missing a side to the sandwich. The rest of your menu sounds really good. There is an Asian Bok Choy salad my family always has and its so good. Here's the recipe:
2 pkgs ramen noodles crushed (don?t use broth with it) 2? oz sliced almonds Dressing: ? cup olive oil ? cup rice vinegar 1 cup + 2tsp white sugar
I'd nix the pinwheels (too similar to the sandwiches you already have) and add a veggie salad and a starch (potato salad, pasta salad, mac & cheese, etc).
At this time of year you could also add a soup instead of the starchy side.

Agreed with pps. You need some sort of side or salad or soup.
I would also get rid of the pinwheels. I'd even say you don't need as many sandwich options. You could lose the ham and or the roast beef and I bet nobody would care or even notice.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
FYI - pregnant ladies shouldnt eat cold cuts unless they're hot. Might want to have a toaster oven or panini press ready for your SIL's sandwich.
Like PP suggested, a salad would be a nice addition.
If the food is fresh from a reputable store, this really isn't an issue and is blown WAY out of proportion by The Bump, IMO.
I agree with this.
I agree that it's blown way out of proportion, but I think most pregnant women would avoid cold cuts at a shower because they have no way of knowing how long they've been sitting out (or if they're from a reputable store, for that matter). I wasn't an overly cautious pregnant eater by any means, but I skipped little sandwiches at parties, just to be safe.
Not sure what it is that's going on The Bump, but most pregnant women I know listen to the advice of their OBs, not strangers on the internet.
OP - you're SIL might be totally ok with eating the cold cuts - just giving you a heads up just in case she isn't b/c not a lot of people know about this possible concern.
I think Gator and I had a similar exchange about pasteurized soft cheeses. Since then, I've realized it's good to just give the hostess that information--we don't know what the preferences and tolerances of the mother-to-be are and a hostess may not even know what the "risky" foods are. She can talk to the mother-to-be about it and determine what to serve.
I 100% agree that food safety during pregnancy is blown WAY out of proportion, especially on the Bump, but I'd rather just not serve the sandwiches than risk the mother-to-be getting all up in arms about it or feel offended that you tried to kill her baby with deli ham.

ha! I thought about the cheese thing earlier, lsgarver.
I realize now that I should've said "SOME moms like to stay away from deli meat during pregnancy."
I guess I'm missing a lot of drama over at The Bump with moms accusing hostesses of killing their babies! haha.
Like 6 said, some hostesses may not think to ask if the mom-to-be has aversions/restrictions (especially if they've never been pregnant themselves).
