Housewarming party

I have sent out the invites but I dont really know what to do now. lol

Do I have a game to play or what?? I want food just dont know how much or what?? I need ideas please!!!

Re: Housewarming party

  • What time and day is the party?  How many people?  Age groups of the people?  How good are you in the kitchen?

Generally I say for a house warming there is no need for a game.  You could do a scavenger hunt around the house though.

  • Please...no games.

As far as food/drink...how many people did you invite?  When is the party (time of day)? etc

  • The party is at 4 on a saturday about 30 people of all ages. I am really good in the kitchen and I was against the games also but my mom kept saying that's what people used to do at HWPs so I am glad you guys agree with me!
  • No games. I have never been to a housewarming with games. How old is your mother?

With a party start time late in the day I would suggest meal type food. Is it during football season? If so some guests may appreciate if the TV is on. I then would suggest super bowl type food. Chili, chips, hamburgers, that type of thing. For most of our recent parties we have done fajitas. Made too much and froze the leftovers. Also sausage cut in small pieces proved to be a popular appetizer.

  • Skip the games and focus on food.  Given the time you should be thinking dinner/app type stuff.  If you want people hanging out all night serve some apps then bring out a dinner.  If you want people to scram before midnight serve some heavy apps that will mean they'll leave for dinner.  I'd also think about how people will be eating (at a table, on a couch) and how you'll feel if someone spills.  Do you want a 5 yo sitting on the white sofa eating a sloppy joe?

Will it be more of an open house were people will come and go and you'll want things out all night? Or will there be a serving time?

The answers will help figure out what to serve.

  • I put filling apps. to be served on the invited. I didnt really put what kind of party it is but i am hoping everyone leaves around 6 so I dont want to serve anything to heavy.
  • You said filling apps so I think you need to serve some filling apps.  For a basic outline I'd pick a couple of proteins both hot and cold- shrimp, mini quiche, maybe wraps cut into fourths, meatballs/sausage/cocktail weenies.  Then I'd add some sort of cheese dish or plate, some dips, and a veggie tray.  I'd round that out with some fillers- nuts, chex, olives.  Then hit some desserts.

Also think about drinks.  I'd have some iced tea, water, coffee, soft drinks, maybe some hot spiced cider.  I'd also add some beer and wine and maybe some signature drink.  You could give someone the drink when they are taking a tour.

Plan on taking people on a tour of the home.  That's why people are there.

  • It sounds like this should be an "open house" housewarming party. Where you say something like stop by anytime between 2-6. You can provide appetizers that are easily refillable since people will be coming and going in a 4 hour period.

    Food I would serve:

-cheese, bread, crackers, salami, olives, grapes, nuts...on a large platter or would cutting board.

-Fruit skewers. Cut up fruit and skewer bites. Make them mini.

    -Veggie and hummus dip.

-Deviled eggs. (be sure to keep only what you need out and refill frequently since they're mayo filled)

    -Cookies and brownie bites.

    Drinks:

    - Coffee, ice tea and lemonade.

    - If you would like to serve an alcoholic beverage I would choose white wine and champagne. I'm assuming you don't want a bunch of people walking around with red wine in their hand...

    Other:

-Have a little favor to send home with your guests. I think my breakfast in a box is perfect for the occasion. It's not spendy and it's easy to make.

-Get a planters pot, large platter, wine bottle or some item that is house related,  and have all your guest sign it. That would be a great keepsake.

I think you have the making of a perfect housewarming shin dig...have fun!

  • I agree to cocktails and heavy apps, and to treat it as an open house.

You could set up appetizer stands in different rooms throughout your house, so that guests can give themselves a tour while mingling and eating! (this will save you from giving tours every 10 minutes, and will keep guests entertained and occupied!)
