do you always quilt with clear thread?

I was just wondering if most people sew the quilting design using a clear upper thread??  I'm very new to quilting and still learning.

I'm having some problems with my clear thread - I can't get the tension right!  The orange bobbin thread I'm using constantly shows in the top of the quilt (ARGHH!).  I don't have the same problem when I use white thread, but I don't like the look of white as much as I like clear...

Re: do you always quilt with clear thread?

  • I usually quilt with white thread because I like the contrast. I always use the same upper & lower thread so minor tension issues don't show.

    What color is your quilt?

  • I have never used clear thread because my mom did once and the quilt has kind of a scratchy top.

Are you doing straight lines or free motion? If you're doing free-motion on anything but a long arm (or some other really advanced machines), it's almost impossible to not have a little bit of the bottom thread show through the top or vice versa. I try to always use the same color on top and bottom just to be safe, whether it be white or a color.

I'm sorry, I just read this and realized it sounded kind of snarky, I don't mean it that way at all. lol I am having one of those mornings! :)

  • I have never quilted with clear thread (in 30+ quilts).

And I either select the bottom thread to match the top pretty closely, or I adjust the tension so that if any thread shows through, it's on the back.

  • I have never quilted with clear thread. I purchased some to use on a playmat for DS, but have not gotten around to finishing it. I usually use white or cream colored thread.

  • I don't use clear thread. I don't like the way it feels. The two threads have different weights. So it would take some fiddling with the tensions, to get the bottom thread to stay put.

It's an I-spy quilt, so half of the squares are some crazy theme or other, and the other half are solid white.  I tried using white thread but it looks kind of silly because you don't see the white thread on the white squares, but you do see it on the theme squares.  I shouldl mention that i'm doing an "S" shaped stiched "in the ditch" (i think i termed that correctly?)

Maybe a bolder color would work for this quilt. (Red, blue, orange, green, yellow, etc.)  You would be more likely to see the quilting on all of the squares instead of just some of them.

  • I've never used clear thread either.  I just use a coordinating color.
