I'm hoping you ladies can help? (gift question)

I know this may seem like an odd way to get suggestions, but I'm hoping for some ideas!!

My FIL (and entire family on DH's side) live in Ireland. Background: FIL is a former dairy farmer; now "dabbles" in work horses; he's 79; very quiet; into politics (will often have a radio program and the tv news on at the same time); smokes and throws back a couple in the evening. My boys are the youngest of 14 grandkids. MIL passed 5 yrs ago.

I have no idea what to get the man for Christmas. I send photos of the boys (and DH) several times throughout the year. We've sent sweaters, heavy socks and gloves a couple of times in the past (since he is still active on his farmland), but, according to DH's sisters, he barely wears them.

We can't send a bottle of something, but in the past, we've had DH's family buy it for us over there and give it to him.

I'm at such a loss. It doesn't have to be anything big but since he usually sends the boys something, I'd like to at least send him something from the kids. The family, overall, is not big on gift-giving.

Any thoughts? Again, I know this is a stretch posting this here, but I'm desperate! Thanks for reading and helping.

  • Subscription to a horse magazine, or any other topic he's interested in.

Beer/wine/whisky of the month club subscription.

Older men are impossible to buy for, so I feel your pain.

  • I didn't realize they do month clubs over there! Thanks - I'll take a look into it.

  • Hiya!

I remember you from the Pgh board (former Pgh nestie markandgila). Honestly, in the UK (so I assume Ireland), gift giving tends to go towards alcohol first!

What about a cozy blanket? I love the wine/beer/whatever of the month club idea.

Any chance you could instead help him pay to come visit? I'm sure he'd love the time with his grandkids?

How the heck are you?! I remember you! :)

Thanks for the ideas! And, sadly, getting over here will not happen - too out of his comfort zone. We knew that getting to him our wedding would be his first, and last, time over here in the States. We are, however, headed over next Spring for his 80th birthday, so only a few more months until we get to see them all!

  • Does he have a "local" pub?  Can you get him money for a tab or a GC there?  Or a GC to a restaurant?

Have a fabulous time in Ireland, I'll keep my fingers crossed for decent weather for y'all. I love the idea of finding his local pub and getting a tab for him!

We're doing really well, thanks. Some bad luck recently (siggy) but still loving life in Scotland. Was back in Pgh in July for my bro's wedding in Cleveland and had a fantastic time, it's still 'home' for us, such a great city.

  • How much do you want to spend?

    Probably around $50.

I mentioned ideas to DH and he said he'll probably get him socks. *eye roll*

Pitt - I'm so sorry you've had the hudles you've had. I'm hoping things work out for you and DH! I'm so glad you're enjoying Scotland, though. I'd love to see more of Europe other than just Ireland! And I'm glad you got back to the States and had a great trip as well. I'm sure your family misses you!!
