Life Inside vs. Outside the Loop

We are busy house shopping and so far we have excluding anything outside 1604.  What traffic we've seen seems too much to deal with.  DH works on the northern part of 281 so we are trying to consider his commute mainly.   But maybe we are missing out not shopping further out.  We did see one house and it was OK, but not perfect for us.

Is there a case to be made for above the loop living?

Re: Life Inside vs. Outside the Loop

  • Well, that's where the city is growing, so if you want new/newish construction, there's probably lots of choices. It just depends on your commute. I live outside the loop and love it. However, DH has a fairly short commute and leaves after peak traffic times. It really just depends on what you value.

Several years ago, people FLOCKED to live on Stone Oak parkway. You couldn't pay me enough to live out there because it's too built up and congested.

I agree about the Stone Oak area.  I work out there and the traffic BLOWS.  Also, I know a lot of people who live in the area and can contest that the quality of people in the area have also slumped. It's got its nice areas and its slum-like areas... just be careful about which neighborhood you choose.  I live in the Medical Center, which isn't super classy, but my property taxes are mega-cheap!

  • We moved about a year ago from outside to inside 1604.  I'm so much happier.  I feel more central and we don't have to strategically plan our outings to take place during non-peak traffic times.  I'm farther from work now, but it takes me the same amount of time to get there because of there being less traffic before getting on 1604.  (I'm near Blanco and Bitters now.)

When we were shopping for the home we're in, I felt the same way and eventually nixed any locations in Stone Oak/outside 1604.  Lots of people didn't understand why, but I just feel like where we are now, we have mature trees, a decent yard, and an older home with more character...all for a decent price.  Can't be beat IMO.

::::Waves::: to neighbor Sara...our apartment is close to Blanco/Bitters and we just purchased a lot to build over on NW Military at Wurzbach.  We are very excited (read scared) to get everything picked out and built.

We live in an older neighborhood by Bandera and 1604.  I love it.  Super convenient, older (1970's) non cookie cutterish houses.  There's a lot of cute older houses by 410 and Fredericksburg, by the Oak Hills CC. They're big, on big lots.
