punch or non-alcoholic drink recipes?

I'm hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year. The food is all under control, but I'm looking for some ideas for drinks. I do not want to serve alcohol out of respect for a family member who is a recovering alcoholic. It just seems mean to drink alcohol in front of someone who struggles every day not to drink.

In any case ... anyone have any good drink recipes without alcohol? Mocktails or punch maybe?

I know I'll make hot cider and coffee to have with dessert, but people don't always want hot beverages with their meal, so I'd like to offer some cold drink options too.

Re: punch or non-alcoholic drink recipes?

  • I like to mix cranberry juice and seltzer water.  Bubbly and festive and seasonal.

  • As the relative of an alcoholic, check with the person's nearest relative and ask them.  You might make the former drinker MORE uncomfortable by not serving and everyone silently thinking it's because of him/her.  Most former alcoholics like everyone to carry on as usual.

And sorry, my fave punch (ginger ale & OJ frozen til slushy) is kind of brunchy and not too Thanksgiving-y.

Hi!  This is my dear friend's recipe and it is awesome.  Maybe too Christmassy?  Also I agree with Tarheels re: the relative.  Maybe have his/her favorite festive non-alcholic drink on hand as well.  Good Luck!

    Egg Nog Punch

1 3/4 to 2 qt. French vanilla or cinnamon icecream

2 qt. dairy eggnog or canned eggnog(chilled)

    1 liter cream soda (chilled)

peppermint sticks, cinnamon sticks, or small candy canes

    ground cinnamon

-Place icecream in punch bowl. Add 1/2 the eggnog. Stir and mash mixture until icecream is melted and mixture is well combined.  Stir in remaing eggnog.  Slowly pour in cream soda and stir. Line punch bowl with candy canes for decoration.  To serve, pour mixture into individual glass, add a candy cane and sprinkle with a little cinnamon.  Rum (YUM!) is optional.  Enjoy!

  • Sorry for all the "stuff" above my message.  Tried deleting it twice...

In some cases, you might be correct. In this case, the family member is someone very close to me (a sibling) and I already know that it's much appreciated that we do no serve alcohol at family parties. The rest of the people attending the holiday dinner aren't big drinkers anyway and will not miss having alcohol - if it was available, they might or might not have a drink, but if it's not there, they won't mind. It would be more awkward to serve alcohol than not to, in this case.

I like the cranberry punch idea, that seems appropriate for the holiday.
