Grrr, stupid Sears... (Update with new table)

doesn't have furniture in their stores anymore! We went in today to buy the dining set we wanted and arrange to have it delivered. We found out they only sell it (and basically all their furniture) online. Which means we'd have to assemble a large table and all the chairs after it was shipped to us. Uh, no thanks. We're going to check out furniture stores over the wknd. I've been looking at store galleries and not finding anything like we want. Why is it so hard to find an oval table, with a leaf that sits up to six when expanded? Almost everything is rectangular, which we don't want because of the corners DH could hit easily. And most don't have leaves anyway which means they'd be too big for us everyday and take up room DH needs to get around. As a side note, there are some weird dining sets out there.

  • Is the assembly that hard?  I would think you'd pretty much just have to screw the legs onto everything and maybe put the backs on the chairs.  I guess you'd have to be do all that work solo though.

Sorry you're having so much trouble finding something.  I always get annoyed when I can't find something that I think is pretty basic too.  Where have you looked so far?  What's your budget?  Maybe someone will have an idea for you!

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I feel ya. We're looking for the exact same table. There's a couple at Pier 1 I'm considering, like this one. (plus, it's named after Cala-dece's baby). Not sure about assembly. You have to buy the chairs separately.

  • I forgot where you are in the valley but I have an aunt who owns a furniture consignment store in Simi Valley. She may or may not have a table you're looking for. Her location might be too far out from you but I think it wouldn't hurt to call and ask. She only accepts furniture in good condition so it's not something that will fall apart on you when you serve Thanksgiving dinner. Bring Down The House (805) 527-0120.

  • What about JC Penney?

The JCPenney home store I went to had two round tables and they NMS. You might have more luck being in a bigger city, though.

Drew would help me as much as possible but I think it would be a TON of work. There's always a lot more than you think. And we've already assembled several pieces since moving and will have to get another chest of drawers for him that we'll have to assemble. So we REALLY don't want to assemble it. Plus I'd have to drag all those boxes of parts up the stairs after it was shipped to us.

Well, we were trying to keep it around $500 but that's not happening unless you assemble it. The one P suggested would be good but that's over $1000 before any charges to deliver it.

Leolyns, does your aunt's store deliver? We don't have any way to bring it home if not because I wouldn't have anyone to help me carry it. She's not too far away, about 30 mins.

  • Okay, since it isn't raining today (like Fri and yesterday) we're heading out to furniture stores. Wish us luck!
  • Well, we finally got one. It isn't exactly what we wanted since there are NO oval tables. It also had to be something DH could roll under. Some of them, the tabletop is too low. This worked for that and even though it's rectangular, the edges are pretty rounded. We got just 6 chairs. It was a good deal because they had no tax so that compensated for having delivery. And it was $799; which isn't bad.image
  • that is pretty!

  • Thanks! It's being delivered on Tues and I'll put up some close up photos. The colors of the chair upholstery actually (surprisingly) matches our living room color scheme.
