After 10 months of unemployment..

I had my first week at my new job. So far, I love it and all the people there. For those looking, I got this job because Kelly Sevices (temp) found my resume on Career Builder. They even managed to get me the same salary I had at my old job. I was there for 20 years so I'm happy that I didn't lose any ground. Also, my co-worker told me of the three people who they interviewed, I was the only one who sent a thank you email. (I did go to spam though, not sure how to get around that. Hardest part was trying to word 8 thank you notes differently.

  • Congrats!  And props on the TY notes!  My mom hires a lot, and once was down to two candidates, then a TY came in the mail from one, so that's who they hired!  Shows respect!

  • i hired two people at my company this week and i will only hire people that send written thank-yous. I figure if they can't take the time to write a thank you and mail it, they won't take the time to do a great job at my company for our clients.

Now that's just ridiculous.   Emailing a thank-you note is common-sense, but using snail mail is weird and desperate.  What if it randomly takes a week (or more) to get to you?  Do you put off hiring them until the mail-person delivers the note?

If their note gets lost in the mail (happens quite frequently around here) do you just shrug and say "too bad, they'd have made a great associate".

    Please stop being petty.

  • Congratulations! This week was my first week of working after 8 months of unemployment also. I was very overwhelmed the first day with information overload but it got better after the first day. I'm amazed at how nice everyone is and I have to say I am so thankful the unemployment period is over!  I do not/will not miss it one bit.

Regarding thank you notes, I sent an email one because the decision was going to be made quickly, followed by a hand written note. I don't care if it was desperate, it got me the dream job that I honestly didn't think I'd get (given I had applied to so many lower level jobs and didn't hear back).

  • honeydew01- Congratulations to you too!  Sorry about the "weird and desperate" part- I don't really mean that.  I should not comment on the nest when I am hungry.  :)

This whole job application process is making me neurotic enough as it is, that it really makes me mad when people in charge of hiring make comments like the one above.  That somebody would potentially toss aside my application for something soooo minor (for example, sending an email instead of a mailed note) is mind-boggling.

  • Congrats!  You must feel such a burden lifted!

BTW, IMO, email thank yous are just fine. As a hiring manager, I'm more likely to appreciate the email instead of more paper on my desk anyway.

  • the last interview I went on was a panel interview. instead of handing me cards with addresses and emails on them, I was given a sheet with every person's email address. they WANTED me to send them email TYs. so I did.

  • Congratulations I was unemployed for 9 months prior to getting my current full time job 6 months ago.  So I can definitely relate.
