Howdy!
I'm applying for a job in a different field, so while I have many of the skills they desire, it is not obvious on my resume. I'm applying for a front-desk position in customer service and adoptions at a local animal shelter and I currently work as a horticulturist for a botanical garden. They are both non-profits and require many of the same customer-service, organizational, and fast-paced environment skills, but I don't want to be passed up because it's obvious I haven't actually ever worked at a front desk or in animal care.
I do currently volunteer for this organization (have for 2+ years) and have owned a wide array of animals.
I guess my question is, can I put my skills section before job experience and education? Will this help them see I have the skills before dismissing me since I'm from a different field?
I'm also trying to demonstrate via cover letter how my current skills apply to what they need - that should help, right?
Thoughts? TIA!
Re: Resume formatting
The majority of resumes I've seen nowadays have a skills or experience summary at the top of the resume, instead of the old-fashioned objective. So what you're suggesting would be the norm these days.
The CL sounds good as well
