Pay question (BAS)

My husband is due to go back to tech school for retraining. He will be in prior enlisted dorms. When he was in the dorms the first time and in basic, they did not pay out 100% BAS since there were chow halls. Will they do the same when he goes into the dorms again? I'm working on our budget to save for the upfront costs of moving and if we may have to ship our dogs AND that I'll be starting out unemployed again.

Re: Pay question (BAS)

  • He should get BAS, but not full per diem if meals are available.

  • When he was in the dorms, it looked like he got per diem for the days he was not in class. So I'll just plan on us receiving about a fourth of his BAS. Oh a side note, I had to tell the guy in finance that BAS was per diem when H's pay got messed up. I asked for a supervisor after that.

  • Joe and I each got full BAS when we went to 7-level and had to live in the dorms and we had two meals available, so I don't know why they'd reduce his BAS. ETA We get full BAS on deployment too and all meals are provided. Despite being fancy AF, I didn't have a kitchen in Iraq. Hard to believe, I know. ;)

J also gets dull BAS on deployment and he isn't fancy AF.

  • Soooo... Plan on getting BAS. And family separation after 30 days. And Ojo-where did you make your umbrella cocktails on your Deployments if you didn't have a kitchen? Or did you not pregame before cubbling?

Girrrl, I'm too cute to make or pay for my own drinks. The Marines across the street did that for me.

  • My husband gets his BAS but then gets a BAS Discounted Meal Rate taken out.  We end up taking home about $50.00 of our BAS.

When I worked it out, we only got around 25% of his BAS in the dorms last time. He also will be in a survival course where every meal is provided. So I'll just count it in and not count in sep pay and it should all work out. I'll just put extra in the e-fund. ETA: I cooked all his meals and brought him lunch daily then he had dinner at home. He was only in the dorms at tech school for two months then got permission to live with me. So he rarely ate at the dinning halls.
