Neighborhoods in Charlotte for 30 somethings

Hi there. My DH and I are doing a "where else could we live" investigation, and Charlotte, NC has come up. We live in NYC and maybe need a change. Where, in your opinions are good neighborhoods to get a house/condo in? We are in our late 30s. We have no kids yet. Our budget is actually very good, we have a lot saved. Love the art & music scene. DH plays a lot of tennis--I like planning literary events.  We are fiscally conservative but very liberal socially & morally.  Thanks!  Any and all comments appreciated.

Re: Neighborhoods in Charlotte for 30 somethings

  • You sound similar to my DH and me.  You should check out Dilworth, Myers Park, Elizabeth, Plaza Midwood.  If you're interested in a condo, Uptown would be a good option also.  All of those neighborhoods are close in to Uptown.  There are certainly plenty of nice neighborhoods in the north or south suburbs where you can get more house for your money, just depends on what sort of neighborhood you're looking for.
  • I would second Plaza Midwood.  Good house for the money and very close to uptown.  Also full of young adult/professionals.
  • I would also suggest the NoDa (North Davidson) area in Charlotte.  It is a very cool artsy area with gallery crawls and local music in corner pub most nights.  It is considered "an area in transition" with older homes being purchased and completely renovated.  It is also only about 5-10 munites to Uptown.

  • These are all good neighborhoods that everyone's had mentioned. I personally would recommend renting a condo, TH, or even SFH near the uptown area before buying anything. You can tour a neighborhood and look at homes, but I truly believe until you live in the area you won't have a good idea of what you're buying into.

As someone who currently lives in the uptown area, my biggest advice to anyone that?s considering buying a place in this area is to research the school districts.  I?m writing this and assuming you?re going to have kids down the road.

My area has horrible schools and I would personally never send my ?theoretical? child to these schools.  I?ve met several people in the Plaza Midwood area who are deal with the same problems.  However, in neighborhoods like Myers Park and Dilworth area you have excellent schools and you definitely pay for it in the price of your home.

Best of luck in your search!!

  • Oh one more thing, check out Freedom Park between Myers Park and Dilworth.  There are quite a few public tennis courts over there for your husband.  :)

  • My DH, DD, and I just relocated to South Charlotte (currently renting in the Dilworth area) from Florida in October and absolutely love the area!  Already having a child, our situation is a little different, although we have some time until she will be in regular school (currently in a child development center uptown), but there are definitely great schools and some areas where it's a little touchy.  However, there are a lot of magnet programs and of course you have the private school route (which is very expensive compared to where we grew up in OH).  I also highly recommend renting first b/c this has given us time to check out neighborhoods, figure out what areas we like, what is most important to us, etc.  There are so many great areas and little pockets, it just takes time to do all the research and find the perfect house!  Good luck in your search and possible move!
