Runners...

Do any of you have a Garmin watch that you run with? Which model do you have? Do you like it?  What don't you like about it?

Any other general points of interest regarding the product?

Re: Runners...

  • I have the 405CX and I love it. It is not as big as the other garmins (which is good for my small wrists).

It is pretty self explanatory. I know it does intervals but I have not used that function yet.

  • I have a 205. It'll be 4 years old this Christmas and is still going strong (though the beeper is kind of deal, but that's 2.5 yrs longer than my Timex Ironman's ever last!). That model is pretty cheap now. Its a little bulky, but its not like I wear it other than for running. Works great, has a good interval feature which you can program on the go, has a backlight, and is water resistant.

I would not get anything that needs calibrating or a footpod.  I also have no interest in my heartrate (one more thing to obsess over/wear) so that's not worth it to me either.

  • I also have the Garmin 205. I got it for Christmas last year. The things I wanted were pace, distance, and time. All of which I got. I did not want a HR monitor, so I'm glad it doesn't have one. I think the 205 is very user friendly. The only real downside is that it is pretty bulky on my wrist. I've taken to just looping it over my hand lately. I have to charge it after every other run, too, but that's not really a big deal.

Mine usually lasts 6-8 hrs. Try downloading the new software.

  • I have the Garmin 305 which is basically the same as the 205 but with the HR strap.  I bought it off of amazon and it was SO much cheaper on there.  Here's the one I have: Garmin Forerunner 305.  It looks like the 405 is down in price, but people complain about not being able to hit the buttons very well while running.

  • I have the 305, too.  I wanted the HR strap for various reasons.  The Garmin rep came to our running group on sat and showed us the newest model which is so nice, but I'm not interested in upgrading at this point (mainly because I have other things I'd rather use the money for!).

One thing he did say is that the accuracy of the older models (205 and 305) is better, because customers complained about how long it took to get the satellites so they made the newer versions quicker, but had to sacrifice accuracy.  To be honest, mine still catches the satellites just as quick as my running partners' newer versions.  The difference is pretty negligible, though.

It seems bulky, but it doesn't bother me unless I'm not running.  When I'm running I don't notice it.
