Turkey Thawing Question

How long does it take a frozen turkey to thaw in the fridge?  We're getting a frozen turkey, but I don't have space in my freezer for it.  If I bought a frozen one today will it be ok in the fridge until next Tuesday (we'll start brining next Tuesday evening)?

Re: Turkey Thawing Question

  • It takes about 24 hours for every 4-5 lbs. of turkey. So 12 - 15 lb bird would be 3 days-ish. Once thawed a turkey can stay in the fridge for another 2 days before you start the brine/cooking process.

I think it is too early to buy if you can't store it in the freezer. Can anyone you know store it for you? It is nice to buy early so you have a better selection of sizes.

  • Nevermind.  I called my mom and she asked the chef at the restaurant she works at.  He also said that Gordon's has super cheap turkeys right now!  I know where I'm going later this morning.

I think I might try and re-organize the freezer and see what happens.  I *might* be able to cram it in there.

    Good luck with your turkey!
