Re: And now, a Christmas Tree poll

  • I spend good money on my little fakie. Growing up, I maybe had a total of 3-4 tree due to our religion (as my parents got older, they became less strict because they realized a Christmas tree won't send you to hell). My husband grew up with fake so we agrees to get a really good looking fake tree. His parent's tree kill me because it's that cheap, 20 dollar fake one.

  • I love our fake tree.  It's pre-lit which is awesome, and it doesn't make a mess. However I didn't put it up last year since H was gone and don't think I'm putting it up this year either.

  • I need a special snowflake! I dont know how to best answer the poll. DH and I have never had a tree in our house. I have never had one in my own adult house. (I dont see the point since we are always traveling for the holidays and arent here to enjoy it)

My parents always have always had fake ones that I remember, I think they had real ones when they were first marriage, but there may have been a squirrel incident...

I dont know what DH's family has historically done. They moved to a tiny condo after the boys left home, so they have had a two foot tree, and also have had nothing up when I was there one year. I dont think they cared enough to deal with the hassel.

ETA: when we do get our own, I am not sure if we will get real or fake. I think I will at least want to try a real one, its more environmental and also I dont know that I want to add one more thing to always be moving around the country with.

  • This is my first fake tree. We can't do real trees until we know more about DD's lung development.
  • We switch it up, depending on if one of us is deployed/TDY and depending on how much we trust the dogs in our house.  Last year we had a fake tabletop tree, year before that (before we had Wilson) we had a large real tree.  Year before that, we had deployments, so no tree.  This year, Joe will be gone, so I don't think I'm setting up the little tree, but we'll see.

  • I grew up with a real tree until I was probably in high school. Actually, we had one real tree that was the "family" tree and a fake one that was in the window and was just the pretty decorated tree.
  • We are going to have a fake one upstairs and a real one downstairs.  I do not believe in fake trees but I am renting a house from my parents right now, the one that is always used to host Christmas so I will put up their fake tree. However, I will be obsessively burning the Winter candle from Bath and Body Works in the same room.

  • I could never smell a reall tree. Like, I don't get people who say they get a real one for the smell. I have to bury my nose in that sucker and inhale deeply to get any smell at all. not to mention I don't care for that smell in the first place. ::runs and hides:::

  • Fakes are for old ladies! :P

My grandma is the only person I know IRL who has a fake.

  • Growing up we always had one of each. A fake upstairs where we put family gifts to our siblings and parents and exchanged those on Christmas Eve. Our parents told us growing up that parents don't get gifts for kids for Christmas because they give them plenty throughout the year.  This was just my parents excuse for why there wasn't gifts under the family tree from them(really it's because they were all under the Santa tree).

A real one downstairs that "Santa" decorated and left gifts under after all the kids went to sleep.

For some reason I've always considered the real one downstairs "THE christmas tree" and the fake one was just some sort of decoration...

  • We always had fakes growing up. When my Dad remarried my Step Mom always had real.. so my Dad converted LoL. I can't tell you how many times the cats & dog drank all the tree water so the tree died or the cats knocked it over. My Dad could never saw that stump level either haha. The needles are such a mess too.

All in all I think real trees are a PITA.  We wont do a tree this year and prob wont until we have kids and/or stop traveling for the holidays. Which makes me sad inside because I love decorating for Christmas.

  • I need a SS!

We have a fake palm tree.

  • I have no idea.  I had a real tree 4 years ago when I first got to Japan and felt like I had to have a taste of home.  I haven't had a tree since, well, besides the 1' fake my mom sent to Korea last year.

I was thinking of getting a good fake this year, now that I have my ornaments back, but who knows.  It seems like a lot of work, and we're lazy.  Plus, as atheists, it's all about the nostalgia, which isn't something worth putting out a lot of effort for.

  • I can't pick one...lol. We use to have a fake one but H said he wanted to start getting real ones from now on, so we ditched my fake tree.

Then last week we got a note from our apartment complex asking us not to have real trees because of the fire hazard.....so IDK what we're going to do.
