Staircase/living room- paint ? PIP

I just posted this on D&R, but I wanted your thoughts too :)

I'm really unsure how to paint the living room and staircase.

Where do I stop the color for the living room. Do I paint the wall that goes up the left of the staircase and the thin part of the wall the railing is attached to the color of the living room?  Then the rest of the staircase is another color- one I haven't picked yet but will probably just be a few shades lighter than the living room?

  • Just by looking at the pictures I think I agree with what you are saying- I would paint the wall that goes up the left of the stairs to match the living room because, if I am guessing correctly, you can see that wall while standing in the living room right?

If you can then I would make that match the living room color, then the opposite wall (on the right of the stairs) I would paint it to match the color of the stairs.

Are you doing the stairs lighter than the living room, because it is always recommended to paint enclosed spaces (or spaces with no windows) a lighter color so not to make the space look even darker.  I love the layout of the stairs and would have SO much fun decorating ALL of the walls with pictures!

Good luck with your painting and I definitely want to see the finished product!

  • Thanks. I love the color. It's dark and cozy. I'll definitely use a lighter color in the staircase.

I was able to get almost a full wall done before my 3 year old came down promising to not get cranky tonight.  Which means he didn't nap. Grrr.

  • That sounds like a really fun project.  I love painting things and am totally bummed that the place I live in now with H does not allow for us to paint any walls :/
