Job help- Should I move forward?

Hello,I'm mostly a lurker, but I hope you guys can give me some advice.  I have been unemployed for three years, since relocating after I married my husband.  We have a 10 month old daughter.  I recently applied and had a phone interview for a position very similar to my last.  The phone interview went well and they want me to come in Friday for an in-person interview.  While setting up the time for the interview and asking the HR rep addtl questions about the company via email, I asked about the work hours for the position. She replied the position is primarily m-f 8am-5pm. However, since the business is 24/7 (call center) and I could be asked to come in early or stay late or called during evenings and weekends.  She asked if I'd be interested in that.Im willing to work extra occasionally, but I'm definitely not interested in Working so much that I don't have a work-life balance. My husband works 10 hour days m-thurs and usually gets home around 5:30.  I value my time with him and my daughter.  The job market has been tough here, so it would be great to get this job. Should I continue with pursuing this job?  Should I ask the manager about work-life balance and overtime in Friday's interview? Thanks! -Sorry no paragraphs; posted on phone

Re: Job help- Should I move forward?

  • I would move forward.  They are being honest in telling you that it's possible you'll be asked to come in early or stay late.  But they didn't give you any indication that this would be common practice, did they?  All call centers I've dealt with say the same things to their employees - but they rarely ever end up working OT.  The only time they do OT is during holidays or weather emergencies.  Things like that.  I personally wouldn't worry about it.

  • Thanks. I wanted to add that the job I'm interviewing for is in a different dept, not the call center. The 24/7 call center drives the business, though.  I would have to work overtime if the call center had some immediate tech issues that need resolution.
  • I mean, if an issue came up it's not uncommon for resources from different departments to be called in to control the fires.  Based on your additional information, I'd still recommend moving forward.  Good luck!
